And the thing about using Windows is, you don't just start over with everything being new; you use existing applications that as of now look very out of place. Some of the little utilities I use haven't been updated in several years. Since many apps aren't "metrofitted" yet, it becomes a clumsy game of switching back and forth between two different interfaces. I wish they had decided to place a window on top of Metro for legacy apps instead of leaving it entirely.
The whole thing seems like it's made for televisions, with the large fonts and the way that everything kicks out to fullscreen. It's like using a media center or 10-foot interface, but for everything on the PC. That works fine if you're doing one thing only, like watching a movie. The problem is, people tend to do many things at once, and it's frustrating not having a taskbar or tray to keep tabs on running applications. It seems to be saying, "just do this one thing and forget about what else is running." I don't like how everything is hidden and I have to hunt for things; it took me a few minutes just to figure out how to shut down.
Hiding the Start Menu (or actually the "Metro Switch") on the desktop is just bizarre. When I'm in the desktop, why can't there be an icon in the corner? Why should I have to move the cursor to the edge and have it pop up? Is there any good reason to hide that?
And personally, I think it's kind of ugly. The solid colors look bland. I hope we'll be able to at least change the background image.
Having said all that, I'll try to get used to it. I may not get it for a while because I'll still be between system builds. Hopefully when I do get it, more apps will be integrated and it will work more smoothly.

umm none of your points are valid. There are tabs still available for your apps. Its in the taskbar when in Desktop mode and you can still see the tabs when in the metro ui by moving the mouse to the left of the screen. You can run all your programs side by side so you can still multitask. I don't understand your large font argument. That's just for the metro ui and if you want to go to desktop mode all you click is the start button and everything will look like windows 7. The ribbon ui is a plus. can you imagine not having to right click a program, or folder. It makes things much more easier.

Why do people use the start menu. Mostly to search and find programs. Its the same in windows 8. For windows 7 all you had to do was hit the start button and start typing the name of the application. In Windows 8, its the exact same. You hit the windows button which takes you the the start menu (Metro UI) and you can just start typing and your application will pop up. There's no extra steps.

I played with it for a bit the other night. Its a fast little OS, but i am guessing that its fast because it has not yet been bogged down with all the bloat crap that the PC Makers are going to cram into it. I have not yet accustomeed myself to the Metro UI and yes i do miss the Start Menu in the lower left. Its something that most/all Windows users have accustomed themselves to over the last 2+ decades. Every Windows OS that I can remember had the Start Button. If Pavlov trained his dog to come to eat after hearing a bell why would he whistle for it? Same thing here. Microsoft has ingrained the Start Button into the Users daily tasks basically.
