You're running Eyefinity, right?

How is the gpu utilization running 1 display at 1080p?

I missed that the first read through.

It's quite puzzling, as after I removed the 3rd card, my CPU usage stayed around the same but the GPU usage went up to the 80s on each card @ 1125/1545 with two cards. With 3 cards, each card would hover around 50% most of the time and spike up to 65-75 during certain parts of the map, which when you do the math, the 2 cards are actually more powerful at that GPU Usage Percentage, than the 3 cards at 50%... which is puzzling.
I certainly hope AMD gets some good solid drivers out soon, hopefully before Kepler, because I've been with AMD since the 5870, only briefly upgrading to the GTX 580 before switching to Tri-fire 6970s, and now Tri-fire 7970s. The 6970s were absolute beasts and never gave me any issues, so hopefully with some more mature drivers, the 7970s will do the same. I just hope AMD doesn't move their attention away from BF3 and onto newer titles because it clearly still needs work.
I'm debating whether I should grab a 2700k and OC it until Ivy Bridge hits for the ~10% IPC gain, or just go ahead and jump on the SB-E bandwagon for the 6 cores/12 threads and eliminate any sort of CPU bottleneck that exists... however I think the money would probably be better spent on the $400 2560x1440 monitor that's been for sale on Ebay for a while, and a 2700k for now instead of dropping 1k on a 3930k + X79 mobo.
I think the higher resolution (1440p), coupled with the 2700k and a good OC (hopefully 5ghz+, or I'll keep buying/reselling chips until I can hit that mark) will do the trick until the 7970 Tri-Fire issue is resolved, and/or Kepler hits and we see how it does, along with Ivy Bridge-E, which will be an absolute beast when it's released, and would definitely be worth waiting for as far as a full system upgrade with it's 8 cores and 16 threads smile.gif

There's less overhead for 2 cards compared to 3.

And PCI2 8x has been shown to be a slight bottleneck on a single 7970, haven't seen any tests on 3 yet but I'd imagine it'd only get worse.

I run 1050 screens. Anyways, i can't fathom why you'd want to run 3 of these cards on one screen. I get 120fps w/ fxaa on ultra on 3 screens. Running this on 1 screen seems like you are just asking for a cpu bottleneck. Hmm, where did i put that spare 1080p panel...

Because the OP is running 1080p, and he needs reassurance that it is not a driver specific issue.

Yeah, I went ahead and ordered the 2560x1440 monitor, and if I decide that I like my 120hz setup better, I'll simply sell it for a small profit. Apparently this 1440p monitor will do 100hz so it should be pretty close in terms of gameplay experience. I will admit, I've been in the mood to put together a nice new beast rig to accompany my 3 7970s, and I think SB-E will be the ticket until IB-E. If anyone can recommend a good mobo for SB-E, let me know. I've been considering the UD7 from Gigabyte, or just grabbing an Asus P9X79 for $200 since 16x/16x/8x PCI-E 3.0 is plenty for 3 7970s, and possibly 3 680s or 8970s in the coming months wink.gif

I am with UD7. Other choice is RIVE.

Two things I would never cheap out; motherboard and PSU.

Without getting too off topic here, can someone explain to me how it's a CPU bottleneck at lower resolutions?

The CPU bottleneck is always there, it only becomes aparent at low res's due to the GPU being able to reach it.

At low res there is an abundance of gpu power so the limiting factor becomes the cpu...
