New Triple Monitor Setup

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I am trying to help build one of my colleagues a new desktop that will be able to support triple monitors (NOTE***This is for productivity, not for gaming). I have never dealt with anything over two monitors or single GPUs, so this is new territory to me. I know the newer cards from AMD offer Eyfinitiy and can support up to 6 monitors but is that all capable from one card and limited by DVI/HDMI ports? Then my other question is, if not will crossfire make it possible? As of right now, we are looking at 1 or 2 Radeon 6770s to do the job. The most gaming he said it would be used for is WoW...

There really is no budget limit on this, as it stands it will be costing about $1700-2000 with everything by CyberPowerPC. We're just trying to get the best price/performance ratio for it to last for 4-6 years.

The specs were looking at:
CPU: AMD Fx-8120 3.10Ghz Octo Core or Intel i5 2550K
MOBO: GigaByte GA-970A-D3 or Asus P8Z68-V LX
RAM: Corsair 8Gb or16Gb (4x4) 1333 DDR3
GPU: x2 AMD Radeon HD 6850 1GB in Crossfire
PSU: Corsair 750W
HDD: Either 60GB Intel 520 SSD for OS w/ 1TB HDD or just 1TB HDD
Cooling: Asetek 510LC Liquid Cooling
Monitor Setup: x3 19-24" LCDs
Keyboard,Mouse, 2.1 Sound, USB 3, card reader, x2 optical drives

It will be purchased in the next 3 days so input is greatly appreciated! We have no bias with Intel/AMD or Nvidia/AMD either.

Why get it prebuilt? Build it yourself. You'll save a whole lot of money, there's just about no reason to buy a computer like that. For $2000, you could get a 2600k, a 7970, and a very good motherboard.... why waste money?

Here's a build I threw together for $1700ish
ScreenShot2012-03-10at20542PM.png
ScreenShot2012-03-10at20551PM.png

and those 6670s will.... be very underpowered.
...and this is about 3x better than the one you were looking at. 2500K, 16GB of DDR3-2133, a 570, possibly two if need be.

obviously doesn't include the monitors. I'm pretty sure you can't hook up three monitors to the same nVidia card (please correct me if I'm wrong), you'd need a second 570... alternatively, you could get a single 7970.

Well I have explained it to him but we are currently in Afghanistan and he would like to get it set up while he is on leave at home. I know it would save lots of money but the 3 year warranty and lifetime tech support are also appealing it him. Right now we are looking at all types of configs with i7s to AMD 8 cores...

***Also note the price includes the 3 monitors

Ah. But ew, those 6670s are just... bleh. How bout a single 7950 or a 7870? Use single-GPU configurations whenever possible. At least that's what I've learned.

Yea that sounds better! I made a i5 2550K, with all similar specs and a 7870 in the same price range. I really dont want to throw a crossfire setup on this guy and when problems pop up he has no idea how to troubleshoot. The displayports are the only other thing Im not familiar with.

I honestly think a 6850 w/ 2 DVI and 1 HDMI to DVI would be easiest and I know it would be plenty for WoW

True, WoW is not exactly demanding on the system.... but across three monitors? What resolution will these monitors be?

^ that.
WoW on maxed graphics across 3 monitors would eat a 6770, maybe even two..my 5770 (basically the same thing as the 6770) gets less than 60 fps on a 23" screen with the settings not maxed. so your going to need some high power stuff going on, unless he doesn't care about view distance...

The 3 year warranty is flashy, but most parts (from respectable companies) have 3-5 year warranties of their own. For ~$2000 you should be able to load a great deal of power into the system. Just remember to not skimp on some parts, but also dont buy the top notch items, because top notch today will be history tomorrow.

Post some pics of the build when it is done thumb.gif
