.... Why would one replace two 6950s with two GTX 480s?

As for the 7950, I would recommend the one from Sapphire. It's whisper quiet cooler keeps it so cool you can overclock past stock 7970 speeds with EASE. thumb.gif

Don't have much experience with Nvidia cards, i had a 9600 several years ago, I have been pretty happy and quite familiar with AMD, I would prefer to stay with AMD but thanks for the input..

Missed your link the first time around will take a good look at it now

bcause HD6950=560GTX TI
HD6970=570=480GTX
and 480GTX SLI performs near 6990 and costs the same as 7950 outperforming all

But you'll be limited by the VRAM in some more modern video games.

depends sometimes when people add high resolution patches uses too much vram if doesnt It´ll run fine

but I have to say 480GTX SLI can make 94°C load but if he has a good airflow he must have 70s

Fair enough, but I still wouldn't recommend a last gen graphics card.

My 2 6950's have never hit more than 73c on load, I have great airflow I am more concerned with better frame rates and smoother play. I want to get away from crossfire and hope that one 7950 OC'd will perform better than two 6950's in crossfire.

Well with a single 7950 you'll not have to deal with games poorly optimized for multi-GPU and you'll have lots of VRAM for games like BF3, leadin to less frame spikes/micro-stutter.
