Stock cooler high temps i7 2700k

Thread Starter
I am building a new computer and am having some issues. I have all my components hooked up out of case. I plan on watercooling so I wanted to make sure everything was in good working order before I put it all together. Everything was going well until I ran some testing. I am getting really high temps on my stock cooler. I am idling around the mid to high 30c range yet, when I run prime95 blend I reach temps around 80c. This seems very high. I tried resetting the cooler making sure it was set properly. It seems to be secure but I still get high temps under load. The cpu vcore is 1.18V under load and the cpu tin is at 60c, the auxtin is 60c, and the tmpin3 is 70c. The fan is running around 2025rpm. #s while running prime95 blend. I really didn't want to have to rma anything but I am not sure what is causing this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

did you take the plastic off the cooler before seating it?

Ya the cooler is the same one in my avatar. The stock cooler intel gives you really isn't that good. Pretty much same situation with my friend and his 2600k, was getting upwards of 70-80 and even spikes to 90.

I would invest in something like a Hyper 212+ just to be safe.

Seriously, you mean the big hunk of plastic that would make it impossible to mount. Is there a very small piece somewhere? I know for sure that the cpu is in contact with a copper disk at the base of the cooler. I believe it is in good contact but there is no way to be completely sure. The sink has been mounted properly

Perfectly normal for a stock heatsink, I get 90c on mine max before I installed a Hyper212.

Is it safe to go ahead and run prime95 for 24hrs to make sure everything is stable.

Did you install your water cooler? I assume you have a closed loop liquid cooler?

You should go to your profile and fill in your sig rig so we know what were dealing with.

90 degree temps with the stock cooler is normal, the stock cooler sucks. If you installed an H50 or H60 or whatever you have then you should be fine.

No im on the stock cooler and its a custom loop that I plan to install after further experimentation. Right now I am running the system on top my motherboard box(only temporarily).

stock cooler = home office / normal users / business solution for companies
dont expect anything from it if you run prime...

throw it out of your window, install your custom loop (please refer to the water cooling section) and you will be fine
