Best for the EXTREME budget?

Thread Starter
Hey, Im new to overclocking AND building PC's, i have some minimal experience with overclocking and I can build a PC(im using a PC built from salvaged parts to write this) Now i have decided to save up some money and build my own rig. The reason for the extreme budget is that i am only 12, but i have saved up 100 bucks this week. Anyways, as a newbie to building PC's I dont really understand how much my motherboard, power supply, and RAM are going to cost. So i was hoping that you could help me out in finding some stuff on newegg for my needs.
Heres what i plan on doing

Getting a Athlon 64 3000+ and a mobo and overclocking it to at least 2.4 Ghz.
Using a ThermalTake VENUS 12 80MM Ball fan and heatsink(What thermal coumpound should i use with this)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835106038

The preferable motherboard would have a single PCI-E slot
A feature full BIOS
The ability to raise the V-Core to 1.7 Volts
An onboard fan for the northbridge

Also this is a very noobish question:Can i use an ATI Graphics Card in an nVidia based mobo?

Thanks,
Ravicus

Hi and welcome to Overclock!
Please fill out your current system specs

Now for a new motherboard, power supply, CPU and RAM it's going to be about $300-400 depending if you want a video card. Computers arent cheap bud.

And for that motherboard I recommend going to newegg.com and looking for a DFI motherboard, socket AM2. They have the fan for the northbridge and are arguably the best overclocking motherboards out there.

Have fun! And remember, if it still boots, you havn't overclocked it enough!

My current system? LOL
P3 875 Mhz 256 mb of ram, onboard video, linux and ME on a 40 gig drive.
BTW, I can use a bunch of stuff from the thing im using, i got a free case with a seethrough door from my friend and i can also use salvaged drives, moniter, some of the cards, and a bunch of other stuff.
But here is my current plan of things i would plan on buying to build a computer(I was told that AM2 Isnt really worth the money.)

PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817153023
30 Bucks
Fan: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835106038
27 bucks
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822145088
54 Bucks
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231011
46 Bucks
MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813136160
77 Bucks
Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103537
55 Bucks
Video Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131007
87 Bucks

Oh Wow I Stepped my to be rig up quite a bit

Total Price: $376

I could make this a bit cheaper by instead getting a 6600 GeForce for 50 bucks and getting a cheaper mobo with the same stats, also i might be able to get away without a aftermarket fan. With all those deductions my total price would be about 296 Bucks

For the time it would take to earn that money at $10 an hour, which build should i go with, full featured? or stripped down. You help me decide please.

well its kind of hard to skimp on things like the psu if your going to be ocing your rig, maybe just wait a little while and save your money up a bit

and if you go am2 then you can still use the ram you have since its ddr2 which would save you some cash and stick with the stock heat sinc till you can afford a better one

psu at 90$

vid 66$

about the cheapest i can think of 330$

and if your vid card is pci then you could use that one you have until you get enough to get a cid card and maybe wait for dx10 if you can
