I want more out of my 7970

Thread Starter
Hello all, Iv been testing out the XFX 7970 Core Edition. I have successfully overclocked to 1220/1600 @ 1.274v to be stable. I can go a bit higher on the memory but i don't see a huge difference when benchmarking with Heaven. I am watercooled so heat isn't an issue. I just feel like I should be able to get more out of the core and in not sure why i cant achieve this. I tried 1260/1375 @ 1.3v and it works for a little bit and crashes. Iv tested that core of 1260 with 1.28v and once you hit 1.27v it crashes. ( just lowered the memory clock to just solely test the core clock). I'm looking for some advice to see if anyone out there has this card and has OC'ed the core to 1300mhz that's the goal I'm trying to shoot for. I'm not sure if flashing the bios will solve my issue or not or if it will be a waste of time? Of if Im not just configured right to achieve that goal. All suggestions and comments are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Just some other random info. ASIC Quality 68.5%. Using Heaven 2.5 testing on settings "DX11, Shader- high, Tessellation- Extreme, 16x, 8x, Fullscreen, Res- 1600/900". MSI AB 2.2.0 Beta 14 and from what AB reads out for my drivers "version 7.14.10.0894, Catalyst 12.3)

Upping the voltage and rising the clock is the only thing you can really on do without damaging your hardware, if that still doesn't work then you've reached a chip limitation. Don't bother overclocking the memory at all because it barely yields any performance gains and will hinder overclocking of the core.

Your cpu wouldn't hold back your core clock just the gains from increasing it.

install msi afterburner and see what your GPU usage is when you are gaming, you might be bottlenecked by your cpu

Would different drivers help?

http://www.overclock.net/t/1225404/xfx-hd-7970-double-d#post_16643517

Not sure if this is valid

It may or may not help man.

Honestly, sometimes drivers make a difference on how GPU's clock, but most of the time, you've just hit the wall. :/

Edit : But what have you got to lose? Worth a shot IMO. thumb.gif

Yep drivers rarely make a difference, but maybe if you bought some ln2 and a kit for your 7970 + some hardmods you could hit 1.6+ lol. Try the new 12.2 WHQL it helped me with stability.
