Yes you could load whs on to an old pc and use it as a fileserver. However, why? You can fileshare on reguler win7, so why not just build your htpc and also include alot of storage? You could then fileshare those files for any other pcs in your house to use. Then you would cut the cost of whs and powering another computer. Or you could even convert that old c2d machien into an htpc, new case more harddrives etc. If your building a new machien, my amd e-350 steams 1080p video just fine. Cpu and mobo cost me $75
yeah, but they said they want computer backup also, and WHS is ideal for that.

Run it in a vm and have the best of both in one rig

Awesome idea! Would I have to have a legit copy of whs as well as my win7 copy?

Just keep in mind two oses could slow down a dual core like your c2d alot. Shouldnt be too much of a problem, since all its doing is streaming video and acting as a fileshare/backup point. Just have at least 8gigs of ram

that was theoretical, the htpc will have an i3-2105 (the hd3000 one), so it should be fine right? Or should i just get a 4 core chip and call it a day?

Wih ht the 2105 should be fine. 65watt tdp makes it better then say an amd x4. Hd3000 more then good enough for htpc
post #18 of 18
Or if power usage isnt too much of a concern you could try to find a good deal on an amd x4 (athlon 631 costs just $80) and pick up a lower end nividia gpu like the 520 or 550 and use it to fold. A true quad would be better at that too. However, for power use (and price) the 2105 wins. OR, no folding and an amd a6. Better gpu then hd3000 and quad core to run two oses.
