How to: Secure Erase your Solid State Drive (SSD) with Parted Magic - Page 22

Wow, I just re-tried the parted magic too and it said my drive was frozen (samsung 850 evo). So I put it in sleep mode, followed your directions and removed all USBs from PC. PC woke up but with no display on monitor.

I then tried unplugging Samsung SSD and rebooting back into parted magic (BIOS in ACHI mode, there is no "hot swap" option in my asrock x99 bios) and when I reconnected SATA DATA cable to Samsung 850 evo and ran EraseDisk, it said the drive needs to be in "securemode" or something.

I really just want to erase the damn info on this drive and sell it. I'm about to just format it via windows and if its some conman that gets my creditcard info so be it, this stuff is driving me mad, I 've been at it since last night. mad.gif

I'm about to just return the M.2. I had to disable CSM and stuff to even get the damn thing to get recognized when installing Windows 8, and I had to use a USB stick of Windows 8 NOT my CD/DVD and like it affects the way USB/UEFI devices load I'm noticing.

i.e. i think if i turn ON CSM in BIOS, it won't load my NVMe drive (CSM needs to be off?) but with CSM off , I never had the option to boot off the USB stick in USB mode, only UEFI

I don't even know if that makes sense, I've been building PCs (mostly gaming ) for a few years now but am a novice with storage/hard drives and all that jazz

In samsung's bootable Secure Erase, when you get to the red and green screen, press ESC to get you DOS prompt, then type in segui0 /s

This enables compatibility mode and allow you to see the screen properly.

Thank you sir. WOW, so I never got Parted Magic to work for me but thank god Samsung Magician Secure Erase worked after about 4+ hours working on it over the span of two-nights.

Well if anyone is google searching this or has a Samsung Drive and tries to use Samsung Magician but then realizes they have Windows 8 or 10 and have to create the USB installer (And if Parted Magic doesn't work for you).... please when you see this red/blue weird screen after you boot from the USB hit ESC a few times. You might have to spam it a bit. It will take you to the DOS .

Ok here type:
segui0 /s

That will make all the text legible and it will ask you to accept the agreements of secure erase via "Y"

it will then scan your disks and then ask you again to hit "Y" if you accept to use secure erase.

Finally, it may say, like it said to me, that your drive is frozen, so it will ask you to remove the SATA/SATA Data cable for a few seconds then to reattach. It prompt you to hit 'any key" and return you back to the DOS screen. Here type AGAIN (don't type segui0.exe like it says! It will just take you back to the mainscreen to hit "Y" but NONE Of the text will be legible!!!!!) :

segui0 /s

It should make you reaccept the 2 things you agree to before by hitting 'Y" and then it should detect and erase the unfrozen SSD this time.

Maybe SEAN can update his guide with this? All this info was basically scattered over google but it would be nice to have this in his ERASE guide so people who have Widows 8 trying to use Samsung Magician won't have any issues!!!!!!!!!!!

I got it from an email form Samsung Support sent me a while back:

"Power on your machine and ensure to boot from the Bootable media by entering your BIOS or accessing your boot sequence. You should enter Samsung SSD Secure Erase Utility, will display a warning message. Type ‘Y’ to accept and continue forward. At that point the application will scan for your SSD and allow you to choose it once scanning is complete. If you receive a message saying that your drive is in a “frozen state”, you will have to perform a Power Cycle (which is disconnecting the SSD from both data and power ports, waiting 3 – 5 seconds, and reconnecting the drive to the ports again). After the Power Cycle has been completed, the program will allow you to continue. Press ‘Y’ to start Secure Erase. If you are placed into a black DOS screen Samsung SECERASE with a blinking cursor, you need to enter the syntax command ‘SEGUI0’ (that is a zero).

If that command yields a distorted screen try segui0 /s (type a space then /s). Once the command is executed, you will be brought back to the FreeDOS Utility to continue onward. Continue with the prompts by pressing the ‘Y’ key until Secure Erase is finished.

Once the operation is complete, hit the ‘Esc’ key to exit the DOS environment and power down your system."

Hey, im planning to secure erase my 840 evo 250GB with magician. Reason is that my drive is in latest FW and performance restoration is done but still have performance issues to these days. My fear is that im using a notebook and i cant open inside it to unplug cables in case of frozen state.

which way should i follow?

You don't need to unplug anything. Parted Magic will ask you to put the system to sleep. Or just use the bootable Samsung tool off a USB.

Is there any free alternative to parted magic, gotta secure erase a 600p Intel, but Intel has no dos on boot tools to secure erase.

Have the Intel 600p as a secondary drive in a system and use the Intel SSD toolbox.
