Computer hard locks after 30-40 minutes of gaming (Crossfire 7970).

I have a problem where my PC would just hard lock after about 30-40 minutes of gaming. I've thought that it's the problem with the XFX 7970, so I replaced it with a new one and it looks like the problem is there still. Happens only when crossfire is enabled, as far as I can tell and only in some games. For example Serious Sam 3 and Just Cause 2. I've tested each card individually and could not get the system to lock up. Sapphire 7970 is definitely fine, but the new XFX 7970 I've tested for only about 1 hour or so without any lock ups, so I can only say that it's at least fine for an hour.

Basically everything would run fine for about 30-40 minutes with both GPUs happily going at around 90 to 99 % load and then the computer would just hard lock and I have to turn the power off to it to get it recovered - just resetting would not work. The GPU temps are at around 70-74 C. I've also disabled turbo boost on the CPU so it runs at stock speed.

Of course I've wiped and reinstalled drivers multiple times and so on.

Could this be PSU? I've monitored voltages right up to the shutdown point and they seem ok. It's sitting at the bottom of the case with limited airflow though, but I'm not sure how sensitive PSUs are to overheating. Plus I've used this PSU to power i5-2400+6990+6970 in the past and it ran fine, but now I've got a more power hungry CPU (3960x) but 2 7970s should be drawing less power than 6990+6970, so it should even out basically or even have lower power consumption.

Could this be the Motherboard? Hm...I'd hate for that to happen cause then I basically have no PC for until I get one back from ASUS.

Doubt it's the RAM because I've tried running different sticks and the problem was still there.

I'm thinking it could still be the XFX 7970 replacement, but I'd really hate to go through another replacement process as the previous one took a few weeks.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Ok, I did some testing now with OCCT running CPU,GPU, and Power Supply tests and I've noticed that 3VCC, AVCC, VIN1, and VIN4 drop from their values down to 0 for a short duration on the graph. Is this normal? Something maybe is up with the sensor? Or does this indicate the problem?

I have to say that the computer didn't freeze, there was no corruption on screen, and OCCT didn't report any errors.

Here's how it would look like.

If you have Catalyst 12.1 CAP3 installed, remove it.

And if you are using Catalyst other than RC11, check here;

Edit: Ignore this, thought you have HX1000W

Do not overload the PSU +12V rail. Distribute the load to 12V1 and 12V2.

Ken,

Hx1050 has a single 12v rail.

Also I don't think hard locks are related to the drivers. If it was crashing or BSODing then yeah. Plus I always do a clean uninstall before putting cards in. Actually used the atiman this time too.
