Is my motherboard holding me back

Thread Starter
I got a set of Crucial Ballistix Smart Tracer 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) ram and its been really temperamental, at running at stock speeds. by default it would clock it at 1333mhz and 9-9-9-24, so I changed it to its suggested 1600mhz 8-8-8-24 and sometimes it runs and sometimes only one chip will work, and its always the chip farthest away from the cpu that doesn't work. at one point i got it working, and i messed with my cpu overclock and it stopped working.

Ive tried overclocking a different set of ram and kinda got the same result. does anyone have experience with my board, in my sig rig.

any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Fishinfan is right. You must run memtest in windows environment or make a bootable memtest86+ test utility to be sure whether problem is with ram or not. Well how did it came to your mind that it is RAM that was creating trouble while overclocking ?

May be 8-8-8-24 at 1600MHz is optimized for Intel CPU because this kit has 'Intel Xtreme Memory Profile' (Intel XMP) which indicates advertise of 8-8-8-24 can only be run at with XMP profile without increasing voltage. Many RAMS are not friendly to AMD CPUs with XMP settings.
I mean you can run at this frequency/voltage, but you may have to increase DRAM voltage to 1.70v - 1.75v instead of Default voltage of 1.65v. You may also have to increase CPU-NB voltage a bit.
