recommend cpu and mobo for C2D build

Thread Starter
I've got a friend who is in the market for a new PC. His budget will be around 2-3k (It'd be good to try to settle around 2.5k) and he needs everything... case, psu, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and/or headphones... everything.

I told him that the way to go is w/ a Core 3 Duo system, and he will probably have me to build it for him. also, he would like this system completed in about a month (he's still got to save up a bit more)

The problem is that I know lots about AMD skt 939... but not a whole lot about Intel or C2D. So, what would the best bang for the buck C2D cpu be? and what's a good mobo that can handle a decent OC. He also would like to possibly be able to go SLI or Crossfire sometime in the future.

I can handle most of the other components, but I'm also open to suggestions for everything else as well.

Whoa Core 3 Duo? Is that better then AM4?

Anyways, tell him to get an E6700 and an Asus WiFi board or the DFI CF C2D board

I like what the previous posters suggestions were:

Motherboard:
ASUS P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP [Price: $229.99 + Shipping]

CPU:
Intel C2D E6700 [Price: $524.00 Free Shipping]
or
Intel C2D E6600 [Price: $316.99 Free Shipping]

Personally I would stick with the ASUS and E6600 and buy two well performing
video cards. As well have enough to buy a nice 20.1" LCD. I just dont see
spending a ton on the CPU and motherboard. Unless you were to go Kentsfield
. . . . but thats another month away .

Get the E6600. The only thing different on the E6700 is the multiplier. I don't think it's worth going with an E6700, because it doesn't improve anything by much.

I would say if you know your getting a C2D then just check reviews on each CPU and compare them. I read a while ago that the e6400 can oc to a higher core clock than the e6600 making it a better choice and thats my 2 cents.

Have you had the chance to test the P5W64 WS PRO?

A few months ago, people were recommending the P5W DH Deluxe. Now it's pushed aside into a corner.

I'll test it tomorrow but i really don't need to. Since Sdumper already did it and so did everyone else over at XS.

That was a few months ago. Then there was no P5W64 WS, but now its here

P5W64 WS overclocks better than P5W DH
