issues getting a gtx 480 to work

Thread Starter
purchased a sparkle gtx 480 for my dad's rig. installed it after uninstalling a gtx 560 ti. it recognizes it in the device manager, but nvidia drivers aren't acting like anything is there and msi ab doesn't recognize it either. i tried to uninstall the existing nvidia drivers (current whql's) and it won't let me do that either. i have tried re-downloading the whql and re-installing it, it keeps telling me the driver installation had an error. i am trying to download a driver from the sparkle website, but it is an old driver (280.26). this is what it says in the device manager: The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.

the problem is that it won't let me update the driver. it keeps getting an error and asks me to restart. when i do, nothing changed. i still have the gtx 560 ti. should i put it back in, uninstall the drivers, then put the 480 back in? i am a little lost on this one. thanks!

Code 28 is a device manager error indicating that the drivers for a given hardware device are not installed. This error means that a previous attempt to update the driver failed or a driver was uninstalled for a given device but was not replaced/updated. This error prompts you to reevaluate your driver installation and reinstall the driver if necessary. In most cases, reinstalling the driver will fix the problem.

Have you tried clean install feature when installing the nvidia drivers?

It won't let me even start the install for drivers. I can't even wipe the old drivers. Is there a way around that somehow?

i am going to put the old 560 ti back in the computer, then uninstall the existing drivers, reinstall the 480, then try to install the nvidia drivers again. hopefully that works.

looks like that did the trick. i also had to go through the device manager and uninstall the driver and re-install the driver manually that way. what a pain.
