x16x16 vs x16x8 vs x8x8

Thread Starter
I just ordered a second 6950 which I will unlock and overclock like the one i have but I have a concern with heat. If i run both at x16 they will be next to each other which isn't good for heat obviously. So I'm wondering would it be better to run at both x16 and deal with the heat or be better to run others where the cards are separated quite a bit. And if that ladder is the better option is x16x8 faster then x8x8 or does it become unstable or something else that would make it not run as well?

Thanks in advance to anyone that can give me some advice smile.gif

You'll get 95-99% of the performance at x8x8. No worries unless you just have money lying around to get a new motherboard for better spacing. Though, most good boards offer a gap between the first and second card in 2 way SLI/Crossfire.

It shouldnt become unstable or anything. Try it in 16x/16x first and check out your temps. If they are too high for your liking, move the bottom card to an 8x slot, and hopefully the temps improve. You shouldnt see a noticable difference, though.

like just stated you really wont see much of a change in performance, gpu's lately can't even use up all the pci-e 2.0 lane bandwidth so their is very little changed unless your doing some crazy 4-way sli monster. so personally i would go with the 8x 8x and avoid unnecessary heat issues.

Edit: even in 4-way sli its still hardly noticeable differences
