And I prefer xfce over gnome or KDE, but I liked gnome2.

I absolutely loved Gnome-shell.

It looks mobile-ish, doesn't let you organize things like you usually would, it is clearly made for touchscreens, yet after using it a couple of days, the regular Windows UI felt sluggish and sticky as heck. thumb.gif

I think my biggest issue with Windows 8, in its present form, is that it feels like two different OSes. Metro is so different, and you have to keep switching back and forth between it and the desktop, that it feels like I'm running something in a VM and completely switching back to the real OS, or kind of like the old days of Windows 3.1 and DOS. There's just no cohesiveness, and I think it would have been better if legacy apps would open in a window on top of Metro, so at least they would feel more like a part of one OS.

However, I'm sure that some of that is due to the fact that most apps that I actually use haven't been integrated yet. I'm not even sure it's fair for me to evaluate it when non-IE browsers, Thunderbird, Steam, you name it, haven't been "metrofitted" yet. I'll be between builds when it's released, so I won't have it for a while, but hopefully by then they'll have Metro versions of most of what I use. I hope it will get to the point where you won't ever see the desktop again. I'd much rather go all in with one interface or the other.

Microsoft is doing a wonderful job at their release schedule, because people who don't wish to use 8 can stick with 7. I might write a review once the Release Candidate comes out later on, but otherwise I have nothing but good things to say about it (unless some how Microsoft completely changes it between Beta and Release). It has both better UI and architectural improvements, the operating systems memory usage was cut in half, it installs in half the time, and it boots in about a third of the time compared to Windows 7. I have challenged OCN members to do a multitasking race with me for over a week now to push Windows 8 Metro vs Windows 7 Start Menu facts to the public. And I haven't had a single person step up and do it. Every single person who's complained about Windows 8 has only stated the same thing, start menu, start menu, start menu. The Consumer Preview has been out for a tad over a week now, and there's still people (the same people) posting complaints over and over again (basically copy + paste) about Metro (some get the idea if they complain enough it will go away). Then they deliberately post "im open minded" in their posts to make it seem like they welcome Metro with open arms, supposedly "until they've tried it". I guess the only way to see for yourself is to download and try it. If you like it you can check out the Windows 8 Fan Club for a place to discuss the real benefits of the operating system without someone deliberately trolling.

well if they want the start menu give them the start menu they are paying for it, even if metro is good it still fails i had to watch the metro fail videos to even know it has those thing hidden in the corners *** Microsoft couldn't have thrown use a bone by putting a transparent tab there sheesh.

The UI is language that every should understand but, it's in freaking Egyptian in windows 8. I'm not that open minded atleast not for 8 they changed to much HOWEVER it would be interesting to test it ona real tablet. as far as i'm concerned it needs a rewrite for the desktop as far as UI but, on tablet i'd like to see that.

kand did you actually own vista!i did!and nomather how you look at it they are vastly different!espacially if you use aero!even without using aero !the underlying way w7 work is so vastly supperior you wouldnt believe!enough to warrant buying w7 if you own vista?

NHA!RUN VISTA IN CLASSIC VIEW AND 99% OF USER WILL BE IMMENSLY LIKING THEIR EXPERIENCE!
ok!lets imagine you do get w8 tomorrow!why?
we arent using 64 bit (god knows it has been avail since 2004)
we arent massivly using dx11(same for this)
we arent using tessalation (samer)
we arent using remote differential compression in anything (god knows this would help a lot everywhere)
we arent using donnybrook (again this would help gaming by a lot !)

it is all nice and good to put out new feature but if programmer wont use them it means sqwat for user
it is like buying a bugatti veron but you can only drive it 30 mile per hour because there is too much traffic on the road.
web is pretty much the same!
