[Geek] A “real” user proves Windows 8 fails on the desktop - Page 30

Vista was much better for quad core CPU's than dual core's because XP couldn't make efficient use of more than two cores. Even after SP3, which was horrible, XP was still nowhere near as good as Vista was. The rewriting of the kernel did Windows a lot of good. Now try running XP on a hexa core or octa core CPU and you will see a huge performance drop.

I installed 7 on a 1.6GHz Atom not long ago with 1GB RAM and it ran better than XP. Also there's the case of it being far more secure than XP. People who still use XP shouldn't complain about security when they simply don't want it.

What a joke this is a guy that probably has trouble with using Windows 7 or any operating system for that matter. I'm pretty sure Microsoft's target market isn't people over 70 years old. Not to say the goal is to alienate them -- but just to point out most of these people have trouble using computers in the first place. The way people use technology is moving at an ever accelerated pace, if Microsoft just maintains the status quo, they will be left in the dust. Plain and simple.

It's a bit annoying to see so many people automatically dismiss Windows 8 with lines like "no start menu? no purchase", and the like. I'd wager that the vast majority of these people have either (a) never used Windows 8, (b) used it only very briefly, or (c) used it with the preconceived notion that it will suck -- thus creating a self fulfilling prophecy.

This is in no way directed toward the people who have genuinely given Windows 8 the time of day and honestly do not like the interface as much, but as I've said, I feel this is probably an extremely small group of people. I bet that if you made up your mind to use Windows 8 for a longer period of time, with NO preconceived notions, and an open mind, many people would actually come to like it better, and become accustomed to the new shortcuts for working your way around the OS.

Many of the people complaining are probably the same people that think Windows 7 is vastly different from and superior to Vista. The reality is that the differences are very slim. Particularly when compared to Vista SP2. The majority of problems Vista had were due to lacking driver and application support -- the kind of problems that Windows 7 would also have if it were dropped into the market at the same time Vista was.

Honestly,I haven't even tried it but I get an idea about how it really is cause I've seen it and it's similar to the way windows phone 7 works, and one of my phones runs windows phone 7.

I won't even try it until final version is released, release candidates are always full of problems.

It sucks that it doesn't have the start button yeah but I'm sure they will add it to the final version, almost everyone is complaining about it missing and I can't think that they'd be stupid enough not to listen to the complaints.

I think that just because it doesn't have the start button doesn't mean is so hard to use,you just got to get used to it that's all.

There really has to be something great in windows 8 to make people switch to it from windows 7.

It depends entirely how detached they are from reality.

Most home users just don't care about learning new interfaces. I mean seriously most people are extremely dis-interested in anything but their browser.

"*** AM I LOOKING AT WHERE'S MY BROWSER!?!?!?!?! HOW DO I WORK THIS??? WHERE'S THE START MENU!?!?!?!"

Many businesses that I know of are still using XP.. Simply because they don't want to pay for W7 for office workers who are only using email clients or Microsoft office applications. Nor do they want to pay to train their staff.
Anyone who thinks more than a tiny number of businesses will actually upgrade to W8 are crazy!
Have any of you ever met any average 50 year olds? Most can barely use xp or windows 7 after years of it. You think any will be able to learn W8 without destroying productivity for a few years while they get used to it?

My mother, after over a decade of using a PC still has problems finding the on button, let alone use it. I have no hope she will ever be able to learn how to use 7 or even 8, especially as she still can't use XP.

People tended to skip every other OS. I had Windows 98 and I really liked it. I avoided ME like plague. I took up XP shortly after it's release because it was actually good. I avoided Vista and went right into Windows 7. Looks like it's Windows 8's turn to get skipped, ridiculed, spat on, and avoided like plague.

Of course no businesses are going to upgrade to Windows 8.. most of them just upgraded to Windows 7. No one ever implied that a large number of businesses would switch to Windows 8 as it is primarily designed to be a consumer platform (note how it will be used on tablets and smartphones as well). Businesses that only need basic features will never have to upgrade to a newer version of windows. Businesses that need the newer operating system will adapt. Simple as that.

Your argument would be valid if MetroUI was harder to use. You clearly haven't used Windows 8 yet because launching basic tasks such as web browsing and word processing has been made infinitely easier with Metro. If anything, Windows 8 will be easier to learn than any previous OS.

EDIT: Here's what they see when they FIRST BOOT UP.

AF2mJ.jpg

You're seriously trying to argue that MetroUI is going to confuse people? That they're not going to be able to find their programs and internet browser when they're 20x larger than what Windows 7 icons were? Give me a break.
