BURN's new rig... maybe

Thread Starter
thanks you guys for the quick replies on my other thread
http://www.overclock.net/intel-gener...d-new-rig.html

as thish is not exactly the most " happenin thread" LOL

anyway
yeah im shooting for as of now anyway

conroe e6700 or 6600 ( despite most pple saying dear god dont on the 6700 i saw sdumper on some wicked oc's hope they are water and not phase as i just skimmed it at the time)
a zalman reservator ( a fanless one or the external one is cool)
some hd silencers and some foam paddy for the case ( Y_Y )
2 sata hard drives in raid 0 at at least 74 gigs ( raptor )
1 or 2donkey drives ( a 300-500 gig store drive)
a nvie 7 series card ( to do the 3d and the zbrush im getting the bang out of)
2 gigs of ram ( not sure what yet but the 6400 variety looks nice, i was gonna go for high fsbs)
a mobo ( i have 3 boards of the asus flavor and im not sure if i should go gigabyte, asus or dfi's new board comin out, so long as i can pull off
a 3d design chipset thingy it rly doesnt matter)

* as i have mentioned that standing radiator has no fans i think and i wanted a quiet case and a "decent overclock" *

any help is appreciated.

Ok, I saw your budget is about $2,000 - $2,500 in your other thread. I aimed for below $2,000, excluding the cooling. I probably would invest in something better than the Zalman. You should ask in the watercooling section about that. Also, sdumper's overclock of over 4GB is on phase... sorry . I'd go for the E6600; I get mine to 3.5GHz on air.

My suggestion:

MoBo: ASUS P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express $229.99
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz LGA 775 $316.99
RAM: G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) $299.00
Video: eVGA 512-P2-N573-AR Geforce 7900GTO 512MB GDDR3 $255.99
HDD1: 2X Western Digital Raptor WD740ADFD 74GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 $299.98
HDD2: 2X Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (Perpendicular Recording) 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s $159.98
DVD: LITE-ON 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Black $31.99
Case: Antec Performance I P180 Silver 0.8mm cold rolled steel $114.99
PSU: PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 EPS12V EPS12V 750W $199.99

Subtotal: $1,908.90

you rreally threw down the gauntlet there
i'll look into it and re=post with any changes that are more comfy towards me in a couple hrs but i'll take ur word for it chozart..btw my specs are somewhat flexibvle ( doesnt have to be raptors) and either vga company is ok as they are both advantageous... if my words sound awkward i dont have my glasses and im typing in the dark lol >_<

It depends a little on your future plans. Going through it part-by-part:
  1. Do you plan to go dual graphics in the future, or not? If not, then the board I picked is about the best you can get (it will do Crossfire or SLI with modded drivers, but at x16, x4). If you do plan dual graphics, the Asus P5W DH is a good choice.
  2. I vote for the E6600 myself, since I got 3.5GHz on air with it, and I saw other good overclocks, like 3.8GHz on water here: http://www.overclock.net/1233624-post68.html. The E6700 is absolutely a good chip and the multi is an advantage, but I don't think it's worth the extra money. With either CPU, I think 3.8 is the highest you can get on water....
  3. RAM: no discussion. DDR2 800, CAS4, is the stuff to get for Core 2 Duo. Corsair 6400C4 (what I have) is good also. Depends a bit on which brand you prefer (G.Skill has a very good reputation for overclocking, esp. the HZ series)
  4. Video: I slightly prefer ATI myself, but this 7900GTO looks like a good deal. Nearly identical performance and a bit better image quality can be had with a 256MB X1900XT, like this one: SAPPHIRE 100168L Radeon X1900XT 256MB GDDR3 $259.99
  5. HDD: $450 for two RAID0 arrays is a lot of money. If you really concerned about data reliability, I'd build a RAID0+1 array with four of these disks: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (Perpendicular Recording Technology) 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s $94.99 a piece for total $379.96. You will have 640GB of storage space (half the total disk space is used for the mirror), which is the same as with two Raptors and two 250GB Seagates I porposed in the rig above for less money, and you don't have to worry about making back ups. If you don't need the mirror, just get two for a RAID0 array, save half the money, and enjoy excellent performance.
  6. DVD: nothing to say about. Possibly get a second DVD reader?
  7. Case: Antec P180 is likely the quietest case out there... well insulated side panels
  8. PSU: I choose the most powerful PSU short of the 1KW units. Trust me, with DX10 around the corner, you'll need to power.

yes in that respect i concur chozart

i was thinking of a RAID0+1 config from the getgo
or in the least a raid 0 and 2 unraided drives

well its not like i wasnt gonna get panel silencing ( that black foam )
but i didnt kno the antec has silencing panels
i guess silencers for the psu and hd would be ideal also as this thing is 2 feet from my bed XDD

the e6600,6700 im going to be fighting up to the end because im kinda stuck either way

was i gonna go dual graphics card?? if i had the dough id just go dual quadro or dual firegl, as i work with open gl stuff alot.. but i might have to ebay those as if u look up quadro's ... tehy are notoriously expensive.

i have a 6800 as is softquadroed and it still will lag after only a mid range poly count

i am shooting for a 3.8 overclock for the two cores so i have to go water thish time.

a thing that i ended up confused about is why i see alot of pple with 6400 rams ( the 800fsb ones) . like 2 gigs worth. and then they overclock the fsb respectively.. there are mentions of mobo's with kensfield support i mean i wanna jump on the bandwagon but id be willing to wait till november if i have a starting clock of 1000^fsb instead of 800... maybe im just taking all this information down improperly.. i will research in the meantime.

yeah im goin for at least 2 gigs as i have 2 gigs now. when vista comes out id like to have 4. lol i do rendering the ram realy does make a difference... if i run out of ram the rendering will cache on my drives, and i dont want it to resort to spinning my drives to death after a year of renderings. (assumes the worst )

Just to make things clear regarding RAM speed:

The Core 2 Duo and Kentsfield CPUs run on an FSB of 1066, or an external frequency of 266MHz (quad pumped). The external frequency of DDR2 533 RAM is also 266MHz, thus, it's actually DDR2 533 RAM that runs 1:1 with the CPU (and not DDR2 1066 as you might think).

Many people choose for DDR2 800 RAM, since it allows for high overclocks on 1:1. With RAM at 1:1, one can hit an FSB of 400MHz (or 1600 quad pumped) before even hitting the stock speed of the RAM again. Also, good DDR2 800 RAM (like the G.Skill HZ's) can hit DDR2 1000 speeds.

To me, the Asus P5B Deluxe (either WiFi or not) with DDR2 800 RAM will make for a nice platform for either Core 2 Duo or Kentfield,.

so you are essentially saying ddr2 1000 is not really worth it right now for the performance ( the price seems to be sucky as well)

I don't think it's worth the extra money.

You will have screaming performance with high quality DDR2 800 RAM, like the G.Skill HZ kit, which can hit DDR2 1000 speeds when yuo overclock it. Even with RAM set faster than your CPU (at DDR2 667 speeds), you can still hit an FSB of 400 before high-quality DDR2 RAM gives up to you.
