I'm looking for a brave soul: Phenom X4 9950 Overclock - Page 2

In relative performance a Ph2 is not a great upgrade from a decently clocked 9950, even in single thread performance is what I was getting at. The FX-4100 I had was at 4.8Ghz, and it was about equal to the 9950 @ 3.1.

Funny thing is, in almost any instance Ive tested, my 9950 is similar to a Phenom II that is a few hundred Mhz faster. Not sure if its due to the MB or what. biggrin.gif

The bonus is, with an AM2+ board you can usually go up to a Phenom II x4 970 (for only $130 or so). And If you're lucky that will OC to ~4Ghz, which would be around a 30-40% improvement in processing power.

Just make sure to check your MB manufacturers CPU support page first.

Also, if you are going to OC your 9950 very far... A "very good" 120mm HSF is REQUIRED. My 9950's temps dropped 10-15c moving from an OK 120mm cooler to a good "direct heatpipe contact" 120mm cooler.

Also, put a dedicated fan on your VRM's. I blew up two MSI 790FX boards due to VRM thermal runaway.

That p2 x4 970 interests me, but I'm scared of the oem version. Only a 30-day warranty!

Ive never had any issues with OEM processors. Just make sure to get a decent cooler with it, expect to spend $40 on a cooler. (the cooler can move to newer builds/upgrades so $40 isnt too bad)

If you really want the warranty, the 965BE is only $5 more and 100mhz slower at stock.

Just dont OC with the stock HSF on the retail processor, I hear that they (HSF's) are useless

I have a solid aftermarket HSF, so it wouldn't be an issue.

But yeah, OCing a Phenom I is like reaching the point of diminishing return...the OC headroom is just so low that you might as well get a Phenom II. I upgraded from a 9850 to a X2 555BE that unlocked, and it was just so much better.

These series are the hardest phenoms to OC ever. I managed to run mine on 3.2ghz (actually my brothers) but that was on an 770X board. All i did was up the FSB and the vCore

Not really the hardest, they just came out way back when 3.4-3.6Ghz was an awesome OC like 5+ is today.

Well thats what I remember of the era at least, right at the end of the Q6600's reign.
