[TV] Asus Zenbook UX31A and UX21A coming soon with Ivy Bridge, WiDi, matte Full HD IPS display, and backlit keyboard - Page 5

It hasn't been specified yet: the company sued for the Zenbook is Pegatron a former spinoff of Asus specialised in DMS (Design and Manufacturing Service) now independently owned.

It's been already mentionned, but it is bothering to have someone (company) think he (it) is allowed to claim ownership to a form factor, that would give Mercedes Benz (or any other inventor/seller/distributor) exclusive rights to that specific paradigm. You don't see picture framers sueing each other to oblivion over a wooden rectangle with frills, nor cubist prosecuted for continuing Picasso's style.

The first Zenbook had a real wow factor to it (The MBA has similar specs since it kept up to date on hardware) it offers more I/O than the MBA , I would've said better hardware, but I saw they are close to identical on the CPU, RAM, Video, SSD front ... how wouldn't you with such constraints. That being said, there are prior laptops that forayed into the fields of ultra portability down to the early to mid 2000s
http://www.hardwarecentral.com/reviews/article.php/3078141/Sharp-Actius-MM10-Review.htm.

My guess, since Asus isn't directly threatened by Apple, is that since Asus has a refresh that wasn't redesigned either Apple stopped bullying Pegatron or Pegatron refused to bend over to accomodate Apple's whim.

As of late it seems like apple is trying to compensate for something by suing everyone (companies) it can.

As for the release date, I can't wait, considering the specs that have already been released for those Zenbooks, would it be considered the best ultrabook (not including MBA here since I don't care for them)?

Hm. I guess they aren't similar at all.

Apple can whine all they want. Fact is that the MBA is just a squished netbook. By default they will all be a very similar shape. At that thickness, you need a solid frame (as you cant use any real support structure), and they'll need a sunken keyboard and a thin screen.

Its like patenting a sports car that sits low to the ground, and is also very short. For what its doing, thats the logical conclusion.

Its like patenting a sports car that sits low to the ground, and is also very short. For what its doing, thats the logical conclusion.

Macbook Air (and all the 2012 Macbook line) will have:

Ivy Bridge
i5 standard, i7 option for ULV (same for MBP 13, plus perhaps the i7-3610QM, 35W quad)
It's rumored that the new Macbooks will have a retina display.
ULV i7 turbos up to 3ghz dual-core I believe, or at least 3ghz single core. Short answer, yes.
HD 4000
Isn't SATA 3 standard for IB? They get their SSDs from Samsung I thought so I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung 830 was used...
USB 3.0 is also standard with IB...
Plus Thunderbolt.

Please at least use some logic before spouting off. It's embarrasing to point out obvious things that you thought were somehow special and unique for the UX31A (mind you, it will probably release after the MBA since Apple gets new Intel CPUs first).

Ultrabooks that don't look like MBA Clones: Toshiba Portege Z835, Lenovo U300s, U400s, U260 (released in 2010 IIRC; way before all the followers started their Ultrabook lines), HP Folio*(heavier than official Ultrabook spec by 0,1lb), Samsung 9... do I need to continue? The distinguishing feature between Zenbook and MBA is the aluminum-ish finish of the lid of the Zenbook. Everything else predominantly is similar between the MBA and Zenbook, and spending about 20 minutes on Photoshop, you could switch the Zenboook color layout (from gray KB to black KB, gray LCD frame to black LCD frame), switch the Asus name to Macbook Air, and a strong majority of people wouldn't know the difference.

I'm not saying that Asus' design is necesarily too similar to the MBA, nor that it's necessarily illegal; but if you had to rate the Ultrabooks from which looked most like MBA, to least like, the Zenbook would win the MBA Clone award.

Do you honestly believe that the "Zenbook looks absolutely NOTHING like the MBA"? Anyone with at least one eye can spot the obvious similarities, or even a blind person can by touching it.

I am not an Apple fanboy and I was actually very close to purchasing the Zenbook. However I am just not excited at the prospect that ASUS will in eventuality engage in a huge lawsuit battle with Apple, because it will not bold well for Zenbook owners.

Can you tell me which one is the macbook air? If you can, and then tell me there is a Zenbook there, then your argument is mute and off-topic. Do you walk into a store where they sell Macbook Airs and Zenbooks and ask them if this is an air or a zenbook? If so, then I think you might need to... oh nvm.

Apple can whine all they want. Fact is that the MBA is just a squished netbook. By default they will all be a very similar shape. At that thickness, you need a solid frame (as you cant use any real support structure), and they'll need a sunken keyboard and a thin screen.

Your point is kind of moot since no laptop sold today has Ivy Bridge yet. Your also comparing an unreleased Zenbook to a currently for sale and eventually to be replaced 2011 MacBook Air. Also if you want to call the MacBook Air a "squished netbook" then you would have to give the currently sold Zenbook the same designation since you say "By default they will all be a very similar shape." I'm not bashing the Zenbook but trying to point out the ridiculousness of your post and argument. We also won't know the real specs of the Zenbook until it's actually released and the same goes for the 2012 MacBook Air, just like we won't know the actual performance of Nvidia's Kelper until it's released.

While I own a 2010 Macbook Air 11 and haven't seen a Zenbook in person myself, I agree that the Zenbook looks very slick. AnandTech said it very well in regards to the looks of the Zenbook:

Apple's design does look a bit more cohesive in my eyes, while the ASUS' Zenbook is more on the tastefully flashy side. Either way it's absolutely gorgeous and one of those things you just have to see to appreciate. I haven't been able to take a photo of the Zenbook that I believe adequately captures just how good this thing looks.

Actually, SATA 3 is standard with SB. As for SSDs Samsung is not or barely selling units to Apple, I think OWC has an exclusive contract on that component with Apple.
