1st software o/c, pre-setting the bios...

Thread Starter
Hi everybody !

I try for the first time to o/c my computer. I read a lot of articles on the net and gained a general sighting of how it works. BUT I would like to be sure of what i'm doing.
I don't fear to burn my pc, but i would like to avoid to reinstall windows and lose my files, so i think i'm just going to o/c with softwares and avoid make a lot of changes in the bios.

My config and i start my questions ( ):

ABIT KN8-Ultra (nf4)
AMD A64 3700+ San Diego + Freezer64, 43/45° normal, 54° on burn
Corsair 2*1Go, DDR400 PC3200 c2pro
X850XT 256Mo PCIe

softwares used to o/c : ClockGen, CPU-Z, A64 Tweaker and benches (3dmark2001, SuperPI...)

1) About the firts settings to do in the bios (before o/c with softwares) :

- How could I set the frequencies fo PCI and PCIe (no AGP)? In the BIOS, i can't see PCI frequencies, and i can only set PCIe between 100MHz and 145Mhz, but not lock it... Is it enough to set on "User Define" instead "Default" to lock PCIe frequency?
By testing ClockGen, i saw that moving one of the two selectors changes CPU, FSB and RAM frequency but not PCI and PCIe. (the 2nd selector changes them). So, perhaps i just have to no touch the 2nd one ... ? (i wouldn't like to burn my GC... )

- to decrease RAM's frequency, the bios doesn't offer me to select it directly. I have to choose between DDR200, 266, 333, 400, etc. I think that it's what i need, but if you could confirm it,that would be cool. I don't want my pc to crash on boot...

2) Tweak the RAM with A64 Tweaker :

The first time i tried this software, it crashed twice my pc (after validating MEMCLK frequency change from 200 to 166, and after disabling and validating 2T Timing. But now, it works, i don't know why...
So i wonder what is the better way (or if one way could be problematic) to decrease the RAM's frequency : do it directly in the bios or do it under windows, with this soft for example ? (i don't care that o/c settings start with windows instead of directly with the bios...)

If you could answer me on these first points (ram and pcie), it would be great.
If i've other questions during the process, i'll come bach there !

Sorry for the noobs questions, but i wouldn't destroy my components...
Thank you for reading this and moreover if you can help me !

Hello mate, good to see some french folks around here.
I have some obs to make about your config. Considering that cooling system (freezer) the loat temp is a bit on the high side. I mean I wouldn't OC my rig if the CPU goes over 50°C on stock. Is there nothing you can do to cool it down like maybe changing the thermal paste with some AS5 or adding another case fan to lower a bit the temps? If you're sure you want to OC despite your temps here's what you could do:
1. Ditch the software OCing tools. They're no good and you're likely to cause more damage to the components by using them than by using the BIOS.
2. Now in the BIOS. If you set the PCIe freq manual at 100MHz, than it's locked at 100. It's as simple as that. The PCI freq will remain at 33.3 also without havng to set anything in particular.
3. Set the ram at DDR333, this way you'll avoid the bottlenecks in your OC caused by the ram. As for the timings it's best uf you set them here. If something goes wrong (too agresive settings) the rig simply won't boot. A BIOS reset should solve this, and than try again with other settings.
4. Lower the LDT (or HTT) multiplier to 4X, you'll find it in the BIOS also.

By using the BIOS to my knowledge there is only way you could toast your cmponents, by raising the voltages excesively. Anything else can be solved through a BIOS reset. Still, if you decide to change the timings through Windows (A64 tweaker) you should think that the RAM is powered on and you make the changes while working, so it's far more dangerous than doing it through the BIOS.

Thanks you for your answers, it's now okay for me about PCI and RAM, thx !

I've also post on an other OC board, they say too that i should avoid OCing under Windows.
So just a question about resetting the bios : will I loose too the settings of my harddrives (2 maxtor plugged in RAID0 and SATA2) and eventually disturb windows installation ? (never done it before)
I don't want too lose any data by reinstalling Windows, because it's a working computer... I've got a backup on external harddrive, but download again all the little utilities, drivers... pfffff...

dragosmp :
I tried first to find solutions on french-speaking boards, but this time it's not as fast as uk or us boards...

Never use software to overclock. Clockgen is notoriously unstable.

Since you can overclock through the BIOS, I would do that.

Plus my experiences of clockgen, I found that each time you rebooted you had to set the FSB in clockgen since it could not save the settings upon power loss.

Thx all for your answers, nice ambient there !
