I don't think that kepler is going to fail, it's just that since the 7970 isn't much of a performance increase from the previous gen, nvidia only has to release a midrage card (gk104) to compete with it, and they will do that because there is no need to release a top end card that will destroy it (i.e. gk110).

It's what, only 40-50% faster than a 6970? Yep. No increase there.

In regards to Ivy Bridge temps... the same amount of leakage on a smaller chip = a hotter chip. So Ivy Bridge is probably pretty leaky and because it's a lot smaller, temps are a lot higher. It doesn't have a large die space to dissipate heat.

Don't forget to do a build log of the process.biggrin.gif

Joking aside, I hope the sensors are just off. If IB does well I would like to upgrade when the "Tick" of the 22nm comes out or else it's another waiting game for Haswell.

I don't know what you consider a good performance increase, but I get just over 40 percent more power out of my 7950 over my 6970. Also note that is a 7950 and not a 7970 which I would assume could pull at least another 10 percent. That is a good performance increase if you ask me.

OT: I was going to upgrade to Ivy Bridge, but with these results I might just get Sandy Bridge as it is cheap as hell right now. Although I hate the prospect of being on a socket that will not have new CPUs on it. I'm pretty upset that Intel is changing sockets every generation which means a whole new build pretty much if I want a new CPU. It has held me back from upgrading for a long time now.

I'm talking about how nvidia only needs to release a card with about 20% more power than a gtx 580 to compete with the 7970. And that is why they are only releasing a midrange card as opposed to the high end card (gk110).

So while the 7970 is quite a bit faster than a 6970....it doesn't have that same increase over a gtx 580.

Basically what I'm saying is that since amd's top tier card (7970) is only as good as a midrange kepler (i.e. gk104) nvidia does not need to release their top tier card (gk110) to compete with it. So many people might get the impression that when kepler is released it is a "fail" when really nvidia is not actually releasing a top tier card, they are just releasing a mid range card (gk104) because of no competition for their gk110.

It's a great way to make money without actually releasing their entire arsenal.

Nvidia is taking a beating at the high end now. I don't know if they can afford to just edge out the 7970. AMD you know isn't just sitting still and waiting on Nvidia. This is just AMD's first gen for the 7900 series, and not to put words into your mouth but you don't think they may have a counter to every Nvidia move planned?

What if AMD drops the hammer on a fully tweaked 79XX sooner than later, as you already know the 7970 card has headroom all to hell. My opinion is that Nvidia better "Drop the hammer" to capture all the sales they can get. It's tit for tat, and right now they are behind.

For me personally, the timing is almost perfect, just waiting on either 3770K, or an unlikely unlocked Xeon (lol i know). biggrin.gif

Moria is almost here! (proposed name of my pending build)

Nvidia isn't releasing GK104 as the GTX 680 because they want to, it's because GK110 isn't anywhere near done. If it were ready, it'd be releasing.

I'm amazed you can have such faith in Kepler when there have been no official (or even leaked) benchmarks to prove it. AMD may have not raised the performance bar that much, but they did deliver already and plenty of people are enjoying their physical cards instead of imaginary cards. In the years I've been on OCN, I've learned to take every rumor with a grain of salt as most of it just disappoints. frown.gif

Anyhow, the high-end Kepler isn't even close to releasing and may even not be seen this year if delays or low yields continue.

@OP: I would just get the 2500K if you really want the upgrade. I'm still using a PhenomII that's just slightly faster than your own Q6600, but I don't plan to upgrade this year as my system still does everything I throw at it.
