Cloning Data from Larger HDD to Smaller SSD

post #1 of 5
Thread Starter
Hey everyone, I'm cloning data again, but this time from a single-partition 580 GB HDD (which only contains ~30 GB of data) to a 60 GB SSD for a nice performance boost.
I know you can't clone it as is because the single partition is larger than the size of the SSD despite only having 30 GB of actual data.

Question(s):
If I shrink the partition on the HDD to ~30 GB or so via Disk Management in Windows 7, will the files all automatically relocate?
Will the second partition generated as a result of the shrinking ^-above-^ become unallocated space, therefore allowing me to clone only the necessary ~30 GB of data to the SSD?

I plan on using EaseUS Todo Backup software, if that helps

Yes

Yes it will become unallocated.

Will you be able to transfer it (clone) ?

Well depends on your software, My Norton Ghost does by partition so it would be able to,

so if EASeUS allows by partition, i see no trouble after shrinking.

Yeah EaseUS allows cloning by partition, fortunately. Toshiba has two separate hidden partitions, one of which contains the Windows 7 system reserved space I believe.

For future reference: http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/156593-hdd-has-3-partions-2.html

Thanks! I'll edit my post if something comes up

You can get rid of the system reserve if you want.

Remove system reserve partition:
