Building a new AMD rig.....Need help and advice....

Thread Starter
Hey all,

I am going to be doing some upgrading.....I have a few decisions to make....

I want to do a 16 or 32GB Ram rig, I am going to be upgrading to a 2gb+ 7 series Radeon GPU (I would like to run a three monitor eyefinity setup)....

I currently have a 1055T..... I am not sure if I should just keep it and wait or upgrade to the FX 8150 (though I have heard they are a flop)....

I am also confused about MOBO's.....I have liked Gigabyte in the past but the reviews on Newegg have lead me to believe that their quality with their AM3+ boards has gone way downhill.....(is this true?) Also I currently have an ASUS board....but I do not like the ease of use for their driver support like Gbyte has.....any suggestions for a High End AM3+ board?

I am looking at going with an SSD...my only concern is data security cause I have heard its nigh impossible to delete data on the drive without wiping the whole drive....any ideas on this? Should I go with a raid setup instead?

Any thoughts on this setup or answer to my questions?

I've always been a big fan of MSI's boards. I'm currently running 970A-G46 and like the board alot. I currently have my Phenom 965 BE @ 4.0GHZ. Stable as can be with good temperatures (though I have a pretty good air cooling setup).

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130637&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-Motherboards+-+AMD-_-MSI-_-13130637

If you go with msi make sure it has the UEFI bios, as the non UEFI ones have gotten some poor reviews.

I was planing on spending about 200 for the Mobo.....I was originally looking at the UD5...the newegg reviews being the deterrent from getting the board....

I forgot to mention I am looking to get a 990fx board....(990FX is the newest chip for AMD's right?)

Yes the 990fx is the newest chipset and I highly recommend the sabertooth board. I have it and I overclocked my 1100t to over 4.0ghz in less than ten minutes. I also have the nb around 2800 so its running nice and fast too. It is a little below your budget so that leaves room for some other upgrades. I would stick with your 1055 for now and upgrade to the second generation of fx chips since the first generation was.n't so great

990FX is the new best chipset for AMD, yes.

I have a 990FXA-UD3 and love it, havent seen any voltage drop people have been claiming. Stick with a Sabertooth or UD5, you'll be fine thumb.gif

I would stay with the 1055 for now, upgrade to Piledriver when it comes out. BD ain't doing so hot right now, and PD will use the same chipset.

Keep your 1055t and overclock it. The 81xx is a bit better in heavaly threaded things but often worse in singalthreaded stuff and is not worth the money if you already have an x6. Keep it

Question: My main complaint about Asus was the lack of easy to use driver support....Gigabyte has the software that does it automatically....is there any way around this with asus? Seems like updating their drivers is a royal pain....

The 970A-G46 may be based on a failure-prone design (it appears to be a 970A-G45 with a larger heatsink - which doesn't necessarily help as capacity and other design faults are the issues).  I recommend, highly, staying away from it.  And I really do not recommend pushing your x4 that far on it either.

The ASUS M5A97 on Superbiiz is a better value.
