The cap acts as a mini battery that can rapidly charge and discharge. This is why they are used on big speakers and sub-woofers.

No conductor is 100% perfect and has a slight resistance, this in turn creates a small voltage drop. Capacitors help to make up for cabling, fluctuating voltages, and rapid changes in load. Basically they just store enough energy to make up for any dips in the 12 V line in this case.

Capacitors on the end of cables are mainly there to prevent PSU/GPU coil whine. The mechanics are complicated, but basically high frequency load changes from the graphics card can cause magnetic resonance in inductors in the PSU, causing them to vibrate and make noise. Putting capacitors on the end of cables evens out those load changes before they hit the PSU, preventing coil whine. The capacitors can also help ripple/EMI suppression, and transient load performance.

That just seems silly.... I would never buy a power supply that had this feature. I understand why it is there, but shouldn't the manufacturer just make a better unit with lower ripple? Or hey, at least put the capacitor under the case?

Also, the device you are powering has capacitors that will also reduce ripple. The best case scenario is that you don't need them, but I am sure most decent quality components have good protection. This goes especially for GPUs and motherboards. Higher quality models have more protection which usually comes in the form of better or more appropriate capacitors.

All in all, you are probably fine, but it is best to have protection everywhere. I just think it is silly to put them on cables biggrin.gif

EDIT: very interesting Phaedrus! That makes sense to me. Too bad they can't solve it on the card itself rolleyes.gif
