Spray Painting a Cd-Rom

Thread Starter
Hello all,
Is there a guide or something ou tthere that show how to remove a cdrom face plate and painting guide? Guessing spray paint straight ontop as it is plastic? I assume no sanding is required due to that?
Thanks in advance
Dave

Try this for removal of the faceplate.

After that just take apart the drive, paint, then put it all back together.

Coming back to this as I am now ready to start painting my cd drive. I'm looking for help on which type of spray paint to use here, I will definately be painting the front bezel... but possibly the casing too now. Is there a paint for both metal and plastic that would suffice for this job?

I understand it is best to give it a light sand with 1200 or so wet and dry? and apply a few coats of primer with sanding inbetween, then sanding and applying a finish (rinse and repeat for desired effect). The colour I need i RAL 9016 for my finish.

Thank you in advance for your help smile.gif

i painted a cd rom, i sanded it a little bit to be able to get the brand off of it, it turned out good but im unsure if it works or not seeing as i got a free one. i just used a knife to cut around the cd part to make sure it would pop out when i used it..thumb.gif good luck

I did 2 faceplates and they came out great. First I removed the plactic piece for the led to shine into and then lifted up the button and put some tape over the button. Then I masked off the clips and proceeded to cleaned the whole thing with a microfiber car cloth and rubbing alchol, next I sprayed it with a few coats of Krylon Fusion Blue. I took one of the drives all the way apart and then scuffed the metal up with some 200 or so grit sand paper and cleaned it with alcohol and Sprayed it too, I am letting all the part cure for 24Hours (18 or so left) and then I'm going to put the face plate back on one of the drives and reassemble the other. I am debating weather or not to clear coat the metal parts of the one I took all the way apart because I am worried about it scratching when I put it back in the case. If anyone is curious, one of the drives was an hp drive and then other is an ASUS drive that is region unlocked and cross flashed to a Lite-On IHAS drive. I took apart the hp but I did not want to void the warrant on the ASUS in case the lazer goes bad or anything

Hey guys thanks for replies smile.gif
I went ahead and went through painting my drive and am very pleased with the outcome wink.gif I ended up clear coating mine to help with the scratching and have it installed into my new case. will post a pic below.
I recommend painting drives to match cases as it looks amazing and isn't all that hard to do ( I figured out)

Looks nice, Did you do just the face plate or all of it? I had some minor scratching when I put my fully painted drive back in but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Did the whole lot as it went with my red and white theme. Will get a picture of it tomorrow and post it here smile.gif
Did you apply clear coats btw?
Just looked at my pic and it looks like the bluray part is black, it's actually a mirror finish, charging up a different camera atm so hope it helps with better quality.

No, I didn't apply clear coat, your DVD drive won't scratch if you make sure it's perfectly in the center when you put i back in.
