Audio to Receiver via Soundcard vs HDMI (GPU)

Thread Starter
Hi,
I am building an HTPC. It has a GTX 560 Ti that supposedly pass audio via it's HDMI output. If i am going to be using this HTPC to stream movies, watch Hulu, Blu Ray movies, and possibly even some gaming (why not with that GPU right?). Would there be any benefit for me using a dedicated Sound Card for Audio output vs the HDMI on my GPU? My receiver is an Onkyo 605.

Thank You
Tron

If your display device has a higher resolution than 1920 x 1080 then it's better off to go with a sound card since receivers will only bypass 1080p from its HDMI output.

I have been trying to research this a little myself. I use a sound card but I'm also use an optical cable because I have an older receiver that doesn't support HDMI audio. Is that better than on board audio? (Well obviously the sound card offers DTS and DD encoding)
