sli/cfx question [16x/16x/4x]

Thread Starter
my mother board supports sli/cfx how ever not being a top end board the third slot always does 4x (16/16/4) at least it doesn't throttle the first 2 slots, how ever could i have say a 4870/4890 in the third slot and still gain some more performance or would it just drag every thing down?

EDIT: my mobo is an AsRocK Extreme4 990FX

I think using 4x has too limited of bandwidth to help a trifire/tri-SLI setup. I can't find a study that corroborates that, but here is a study that compares a crossfire/SLI setup.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crossfire-pci-express,2095-7.html

16x/8x is fine, but 16x/4x is hurtin' bad.

wonder why they didn't make it 8/8/8 sigh there ware almost no am3+ mobos to choose from on newegg so i got this black and blue them
slot lay out that lets my use xonar d1 plus cfx/sli and has 8+1 phase

EDIT: did some reading on the link seems like i would have to try it for my self and see what results i get before and after i just know i'd want the faster card in the 4x slot to keep up.
