Would I know if I damaged my 2500k during install?

Thread Starter
This is my first time installing an Intel chip on a LGA 1155 socket and when I was lowering the tension bar it felt very hard and forced.

Here is how I installed the chip (after watching how to's of course)

I placed the chip lightly on to the socket and lined it up with the cut outs. I then followed the instruction on how to place the "holder" before lowering the tension bar.

When I was lowering the tension bar I could hear a lot of crackling, I didn't completely lower it because I was freaking out.
258
I looked at the chip and saw the two "dents" on both sides like on the chip above. (This was only with 60% of the tension bar lowered)

I looked on toms hardware and saw that it was normal to have some noise. I decided the completely lower it and leave it there, so I do not know exactly how much more the sides where bent.

If I had messed up my chip would I have seen and error? I have done a PRIM95 stress test and received no errors. I only left it on for about 2 minutes.

The only problem I get with my computer are that might be CPU related are but not sure.
- Auxtin and Cputin temps are just way to high I do not think it is my airflow because I have tried different flows and even open case.
- My computer will begin booting up (before windows splash screen) and the computer turns off and then restarts and then boots fine. This happens every time after a cold start.

Run Prime95 for a bit longer just for posterity.

Of course, running Prime95 has nothing to do with installing the CPU wrong -- if you installed it incorrectly, the computer would not boot. Running Prime95 is just to make sure nothing is wrong with the CPU itself.

its always scary to install the cpu on a new board. i made sure to have the manuel handy and to look at how the levers and doors needed to be placed. i didnt have any damage to my chip, but i did require some force to lock it into place.

The crackling is fine bud, it happens during a lot (if not all) SB installs. You haven’t damaged your chip.

What's your motherboard? If it's an Asus P67, then this is also common. A BIOS update might fix it. I think Gigabyte P67 boards had this issue too, not sure though.

you wouldn't, by chance, have an asrock motherboard?

Mine does this too. I assume its normal.

Anyway, if it runs and is stable at stock, the CPU is probably fine.

I just finished my rig a week or so ago and I thought the same exact thing. It felt like it was way too rough to lock it in place. However, as the menu showed me, I was doing everything as they said to do it, so I still applied the pressure needed to lock it. Mine has a bit of a shallow area like your on the edge but it works just fine thumb.gif

That sound is your motherboard flexing. It's normal when you're lowering the arm.

But are you sure those are dents? Wipe those spots, cause I've never done that or seen that on any chip, or any crappy motherboard.

And read your core temps under load, not CPUTIN (it's useless, always high and may even get stuck at 129 one day when the sensor fails).
