[TPU] Dual-GK104 Graphics Card Arrives in May - Page 2

I think what Nvidia is encouraging for multi GPU. You can get 2x GTX 680 for about $300 more than 7970. but it scale and performance twice than 7970. This is what the outcome in HD 7990 and  GTX 690 according to the chart.

ie.

HD 7990 or HD 7970x2 $1000 = +/- %100

GTX 690 or GTX 680 x2 $800 =  +/- %110

Nvidia is more attractive to buy even the single card perform slower but scale better in dual?

I think I am totally wrong about this, just my 2 cents. Simply confused.

ie. HD 6970 crossfire > HD 6990

I really hope the 7990 comes out this month. If not I'll be passing on this generations dual gpu cards.

Same, I've got about 2 more months of wait in me then I'll wait till next year for real cards to hit the market.

I have a fully built SB-E system waiting on gpu's so I'm not waiting another 2 months.

3) 1 single-core, single-package GPU which is basically 2 GK104s bolted together at the lithographic level, on a single card.
Problem with Option 3 is that it might out-run whatever high-end single GPU NV have planned in the future, although admittedly it'll be hobbled by its memory interface. Problem with Option 2 is that the package might produce too much heat for a single contact point on the heatsink. Problem with Option 1 is that it's not very innovative.
Will be interesting though. Would at least love to a see a dual-core, single package product, for innovation's sake.

What do you mean about lithographic level anyway? It's seems some breakthrough?

Wait.. 680 x2 = $800 ?
I read rumored price for GTX 680 is $549 on TPU so from where do you come with any info about your " rumored price " ?

It's not really a breakthrough. Intel has been doing this for a little while now. When putting the architecture for chips together, they can "bolt in" for example a second memory controller, or extra cache. Then they send the chip design off for production.

In this case, I'm speculating NV could effectively bolt two GK104s together into a single powerful GPU, so instead of 1536 CUDA cores, it would have 3072 CUDA cores. This would effectively double the compute power of a single GK104, but since it would still be a single GPU it wouldn't suffer from micro-stutter. Imagine the block diagram below with twice the number of GPCs...

528

The problem with this design is 1) heat and 2) bandwidth starvation, since the memory interface would still be 256-bit.

The chances are though that the best we'll get is a dual-core GPU in a single processor package rather than two, This will make for a card that's much physically shorter, but will still have two discrete GPU cores that can be accessed separately and would need their own memory pools.

Dual GPU cards have bad scaling due to drivers, and generally perform worse than crossfire/SLI solutions. 7970 x2 is better than a 7990 IMO. A single 7990 is an elegant solution, but, it's less practical. NCIX did an Intel Vs AMD gaming benchmark and a single 6970 did better than 2 GTX 590s in Fear 3 on both platforms.
