Im very new to this stuff so i don't know what is possible or what not but can someone help me.
Is it possible to overclock this card without danger of something going terribly wrong?
If so what could i do to change it and what programs and settings etc and would it make much of a difference?

This is my laptop.

Asus 17.3" N75SF-V2G-TZ1000V

You can overclock it with Afterburner. You'll have to test your OC just like with any other gfx card, not sure how high it'll go. I've taken the 540m in my lappy to I think 750c/950m, I think the starting clocks are the same as yours. You do wanna watch temps though, both on cpu and gpu cause usually it's all one heatsink that cools both parts.

Afterburner should work, but keep in mind, a laptop's cooling system is NOWHERE near a desktops, so keep those temperatures in check.

Not really, on a laptop there really isn't much of an increase you can expect. Then again, your screen is 1080p..
Any overclocking at all would help you squeeze more frames, but only a few.

I overclock my laptop to 550m speeds. Works great! I highly suggest a cooling pad. Even though I've rebuilt my laptop about 5 times till I got the cooling just right on the chips it still doesn't sit on the chips like I want them, nice Dell design flaw in the heatsink. With my cooling pad I rarely go above 70C on the laptop overclocked.
What you won't get is voltage unlock. I think that'd be a huge stretch but it seems these m series chips can overclock quite well. Performance gains aren't that much though...
496

Here's what I had to do with my cooling:
400
I use new mx-2 paste, lapped the heatsinks surfaces and cut the bar between the blower fan and the rest of the heatsinks. The CPU and GPU aren't sitting at the same level and it makes the heatsink uneven and its just overall bad...but I've got it to where it stays decently cool.

My 420m @ 550m speeds is >10x less performance than my 560. In heaven3.0 I'll get something like 13fps when my desktop gets 65fps. Its nuts.
