2Gb was the highest VRAM that a reference design shipped with last generation.
3Gb was the highest VRAM that a reference design shipped with new generation.

Oh sorry, didn't realize that 3GB was the absolute minimum frame buffer for a proper e-peen this time around.

The vast majority of users in this market use monitors with resolutions of 1920 x 1200 or below where 2GB is pretty much unnecessary. AMD is charging for 3GB of RAM which most users have no need for. If you're happy paying for things you won't use then be my guest and shun Nvidia for finding 3GB as a standard framebuffer a bit unnecessary.

Not everyone is going to spring for a $500 monitor, at least not enough to warrant a necessary 3GB of memory. Also this model will probably have a 4GB variant sometime down the road so that all you VRAM connoisseurs can be appeased.

Your complaint could be valid if the HD 7900 series cards were positioned as mid range or low end products.
However, being the flagship products they are, they are supposed to be feature packed (e.g. Eyefinity) and loaded with the provisions needed to use said features.
The lowest common denominator has other options besides the 7900 series.

3g isn't the minimum. However, stating that everybody must accept 2g on a "top card" doesn't strike me as right.

Do you play on 1 monitor? Ok, fine.
Do you plan to use sli/xfire and go for 3x 1080p or more with eyecandy absurdity? I wouldn't bet on 2g.

I'd rather get more vram. I know I'll have headroom for any crazy idea I get down the road. If I never use it, well... no big deal biggrin.gif

With stacked power connectors I'd imagine it'll look ugly as hell with a waterblock on it.

I'm not sure if you're actually serious.
When I bought the 6990, 2g vram was an upgrade.

I'd rather stick with the 7970@3g vram, even if it performs 10% worse than this semi-kepler.

But, you see, if you go for this card, more power to you. I won't.

really? did nvidia molested you or something? i dont care who is the fastest card but if it is amd i would rather have the amd card and if it is nvidia i would rather have the nvidia card. i would never pay the same to be slower.

You missed the point. I don't care about AMD or nVidia brand in the end. I just think 3g vram is better than 10% performance.
You can compensate performance with multiple GPUs. You can not compensate low vram.
That's all.

When/if nVidia launches a good high-end card, I'll gladly consider it.

I think the gtx 580 3g is an awesome card, for example.

I was holding out for a GTX 670 to replace my GTX 470......... The HD 7970 is looking more and more like it will be my next GPU. Now if only Dell.com didn't have it listed at $685..... Argh I hate having to use credit at one place.

All Radeon cards are to be called AMD not ATI!
Example: AMD Radeon HD 7970.

Hey look, we agree on something. ATI needs to die. Long live AMD.
