Help plz been some time now

Thread Starter
Ok what I have is a q6600 running at 2.4 GHz. and need to upgrade my motherboard is going one of my PCI's is going or gone can't run my both my 550ti any more. The last time I built a computer was back when 686's were the big new thing wow that was some time ago so I'm a little rusty. Have two questions (1.)how big/small of a difference is the q6600 I have now to saya i7 950 or should I go to the i7 2700.(2.) Would I have to do a full reinstall on my hard drive when I put in the new motherboard and CPU I just put that one in about 6mouths ago now. and if there is anything i should look out for .

Thanks
Mark

1) The difference is huge.

2) Best practice is to always reformat with a new build. Driver conflicts are abound without a reformat.

3) Also, what's your budget?

Well that would be an easy choice even now. I'd say pick up a 2500k if you can't wait, or if you can hold out for a few months, grab an Ivy equivalent of the 2500k and any number of boards + RAM would be a good choice. Personally, I'd go for a Gene motherboard from ASUS, but that's more or less preference since most of them are preatty good quality.

What are you using your PC for? It will help determine if you need HT or not. Even if you need HT I would save the $35 and get the 2600k. It's only a 100mhz difference which you can easily get with just a change in multiplier.

Good idea, but that HT on the i7 is not going to help you in 99% of games.

You could go with the 2500K and the P8Z68-V/GEN3 board for just about $400 and get the same frame rates. Especially with a 550ti.. it will probably bottleneck any new CPU.

If you don't need real SLI you could save another $80 with the LE/LX board. It will still OC like nuts.

And put the savings toward an HD7870. thumb.gif

Ok I think I went a little overboard what was going to be a motherboard and CPU turned into

ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe/Gen3 motherboard
Intel Core i7- 2700k 3.9GHz Turbo CPU
Corsair 8GB DDR3 SDRAM
Corsair CWCH60 Liquid CPU cooler
2x Intel 320 80 SSD HHD set for a RAID0
2x EVGA 550ti SLI setup

And about 3 hours in case mods to make the cooler to fit in my XPS 730 case had to make it look nice. And repining some of the case plugs to work with the new board. Very happy so far in the way she runs and looks: D
