Ddr2 667 Or 800?

Thread Starter
Right now I have 2GB of DDR2 667, these ones here:

OCZ Gold Series 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5400)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227047

But, I am upgrading my system to a newer mobo, maybe just the Intel DG965WH. Not sure about that, but that is another question. Right now I am wondering if it is worth the extra cost to buy new RAM to get the DDR2 800 assuming the mobo I get supports it.

The other thing I heard is that the conroe, which is what I am getting, does not take advantage of that faster memory? Is this right?

If your sticking with your Pentium D 820, keep the DDR2-667.

If your going Conroe, I'm not entirely sure the lowest speed you can run without a divider. Pretty sure you can still run DDR2-667 without a divider, though - but I'm not sure. If you OC go DDR2-800 anyway.

The mobo is only because that is what I am getting with this "package" I am buying. That is why I said "maybe" on that. I checked out the DS3, but honestly not sure what to really look for. Of course I am on some sort of budget, but is there a better mobo for a good price that you would recommend? Or is that one the way to go?

I think that I may get the better mobo, and if the memory I have works stick with it until memory prices come down a little or I find a good buy. But what I a goood memory for a decent price?

Right now I really don't OC, but with the Conroe I am really looking forward to seeing what I can do.

Thanks for the quick replies, and any more help you can give me.

Intel Retail Edge package: $220 includes e6300 + that mobo + windows vista ultimate. I'm waiting for the same package too, assuming I keep my job there.

That package sounds like a good deal. If you don't want to board, sell it! I am sure you'll be getting more than $40 for it

The FSB of the Core 2 Duo is 1066 MHz, or 266MHz external. Thus, it's DDR2 533 that runs at 1:1 with the RAM. DDR2 667 would get you up to an FSB of 333MHz on 1:1 and to 444MHz max (based on the lowest speed for RAM, which is DDR2 400 speeds). DDR2 800 will give you more headroom, 400MHz 1:1. If you're on a budget, I'd stick with the DDR2 667 for now (and hope prices go down for RAM).

The DS3 of Gigabye is a good board that overclocks well. the S3 is cheaper, and is basically the same, just no solid caps.

Yep . To good of a deal to pass up. Just keep your job for a little longer . I am just hoping that we get Vista right away and don't have to wait for the official release of it.

Thanks Chozart for the info on the RAM and the board. I have decided to get a better mobo for sure, and like you mentioned I will probably use the RAM I have now and wait for a deal on something faster.

Thanks for the replies.

I already have some OCZ Gold Series that I plan on using for now. Are they pretty overclockable?

Who makes the team estreem memory? I haven't event heard of it before.

Not sure who makes the Team Extreem stuff, but I know Tankguys sells it.
It's good stuff!

However, I see that DDR2 800, CAS4, now goes for $292, which is nearly the same price as a comparable G.Skill or Corsair kit. In which case, I'd pick the G.Skill kit, which is proven quality.
