Original Xbox framerate issues

I was given an original XBOX along with halo 1 and 2 but the games are unplayable, It feels like as soon as there is any action on the screen the framerate drops to barely above 12 fps, I obviously don't know the exact framerate but it feels like the low teens. is there any chance a cleaning of the inside will fix it or is it totally screwed up hardware wise? The games are in perfect condition so it isn't a bad disc or anything.

Mod it, All you need is splinter cell (the first one) and the exploitable saved to a memory card. I have the action replay needed but, its not hard to make your own. using a PC you can easly swap a bigger hard drive in as well.
Before I traded away my old xbox, it had a 120gb hard drive packed with everything, you can give it a 360 look alike dashboard if you wanted. XBMC is a pretty good dashboard for it. You can also rip all your disc's to the xbox and never need a disc again.

Once its modded, modding halo 2 files can be fun.

Cleaning it should help, those things can get pretty hot, while modded you can monitor temps btw.
