[Kickstarter] Wasteland 2 by Brian Fargo's inXile entertainment

Thread Starter
Well, it looks like Brian Fargo the founder of Interplay which many of us remember very fondly has started a kickstarter funded project for a sequel to Wasteland the game that inspired Fallout. They seem to want to make a party based, turn based, top down rpg. I haven't played something like that in years. I'm sure that some of you guys would be interested as well.

Here is a link to the kickstarter project page.
Quote:
"I’m personally a big fan of the Wasteland series from having played the original game in the late 80s; I’ve also always admired Brian Fargo’s courage to experiment with new designs and game engines from my time working with him in the early days of BioWare when we worked with Interplay, and as a result I’m really looking forward to seeing the next game in the Wasteland series!" - Ray Muzyka - CEO Bioware
Quote:
"Hats off to Fargo and inXile, I'm definitely putting my money down when they start up their Kickstarter fund, and I'll donate just as much as I did to Double Fine. Give me Wasteland 2 already." - Chris Avellone - RPG designer extraordinaire
Quote:
"Brian was one of the pioneers for the computer RPG with games like Bard's Tale and Wasteland. I would be very excited to see what Brian could achieve with a sequel to such a classic like the first Wasteland." - Rob Pardo - Executive Vice President of Game Design, Blizzard Entertainment

Don't hold your breath... I doubt even a fraction of the OCN gamer base is interested in such a game.

That said, they are off to a strong start, 2/3 of the way to their goal with the support of 11+k backers.

Also worth noting,
Quote:
To do this game right, we need to raise $1 million, but you'll notice our funding request is $900,000 and that is because Brian Fargo has offered to fund the last $100,000 if need be. That’s a lot of money needed, but not when compared with the budgets of most full scale RPGs made today. The original game sold over 100,000 copies—on the Apple ][ and Commodore 64 platforms back in the day. If everyone who played it then backs the project at the most basic level, the game is on.

But we’re looking ahead to what we can do if you all back this project in force. At $1.25 million, the money will go primarily into making the world bigger, adding more maps, more divergent stories and even more music.

At $1.5 million, the world gets even bigger. You’ll have more adventures to play, more challenges to deal with, and a greater level of complexity to the entire storyline. We’ll add more environments, story elements, and characters to make the rich world come alive even more. We will even be able to bring Wasteland 2 to OS X for Mac lovers. And after $1.5 million the sky is the limit.

The tiers are pretty solid too, I'm in for $100... Oldschool gamers(or those who grew up playing old school games despite their age) need to put up or shut up.

-EDIT-

The RPG Codex is actually pooling their resources to get an in game shrine.

You aren't kidding. I was really expecting more of a response. I would be willing to bet that more people here would enjoy a game like this than they think. This really has the possibility to be an epic game. Wasteland was a little before my time but I have such fond memories of Interplay titles. I also really miss isometric, turn based, party based rpgs. They are already at almost $800,000. I'm hoping that like doublefine that they far surpass their goal.

I've definitely heard of Wasteland 1, but I didn't know it was on the C64. Seeing as how I have a working one, I need to track this game down thinking.gif. I decided to back it, with an amount I will probably regret later redface.gif

While technically not before my time(I was a toddler when it was originally released) I did play it on an Apple II in the mid 90s... That still counts though! tongue.gif

Definitely agree on the much needed isometric, TB, party based RPG experience... I'm pretty sure they'll get the minimum and perhaps even 1.5 million or more. I hope Fargo is ready for the pressure that comes along with the expectations of a starved old-school RPG loving crowd.

Never played Wasteland sadly, although I might support it just for the other games I've got to enjoy by Interplay (Not many mind you, only ones I've played are Fallout 1 and some of Fallout 2, alongside Earthworm Jim and Descent.)

Fully funded and then some(977k atm), if this continues who knows where it will finish. With any luck they'll reach Double Fine's level...

Highly doubt they'll reach over 3 mil like DoubleFine did but hell as long as the game is made its a win. At least we know there are still some real gamers out there!
