Hardware you wish you didn't buy and why? - Page 2

I would have to say any Zalman products. I have bought many Zalman products and have had bad luck with all of them. Here is a few of the products i have used.

CNPS9700 LED - Fan started making very annoying grinding type noise after a few months of use.

CNPS7500-Cu LED - Bought two of these and both of the leds in the fans went out after around a year of use.

MFC3 Digital Fan Controller - Controller button would get stuck pushed in and had problems setting my fan rpm's to what i needed.

In the end i would say that anyone that is thinking about buying any Zalman products to do plenty of research first.

Hi all,

probably a GTX480 recently. Was debating at the time between the 570 or the 480 as the 480 was cheaper, more RAM, and a wider memory BUS (I think!) and figured I could overclock to compensate for the clock difference.

Noise was unbearable, especially with any overclock so ended up spending another £100 on a Thermalright shaman and the vrm2 (think thats the name!) to cool the power regulation chips.

Had to cut one of the thumb nuts in half that held the vrm on to be able to get the GPU block to sit flush and the whole bundle takes up 4x slots down plus the width of another 2x in a little tab heatsink on the backside!

Upgraded to 7970's now.... such a waste! Will prob end up in my media PC. At least the 480 has HDMI audio out. Shame that support (for HDMI audio) sucks in linux!

Fun thread! smile.gif Mine is from a ways back. Pardon me if I get the chip incorrect. This was my first ever build from the ground up. I wanted "bleeding edge" performance for the time. I bought an AMD FX-51 CPU, it was 940 pin and needed to use expensive server type memory. If I recall correctly, ahh, no need to recall, NewEgg still has the invoice from 2004, lol. My regret on this purchase? About a month after I purchased $800 worth of 1gb RAM, AMD released the 939 pin version of this proc and dropped the need to use the expensive memory modules! I did run this rig for quite a few years, until the motherboard gave up ( I am thinking, never did figure it out) By the time it died, MB's for this proc were in the collectors item price range. When I found one asking price was higher then it was new. I still have the CPU and ram in the retired case, the tiny raptor HD's are in another rig, the video card I think I sold to someone who needed an AGP card.

Phanteks PH-TC14PE cooler. I'm not even noticing a big temp change from the Hyper 212 and i spent damn near 100 dollars on it.

Thread Starter
Just realised i didn't contribute to my own thread.

For me it was buying my 5750 to "see me through till pay day." I'm still using it:/ lesson learned. Waiting for next gen cards to fully emerge, then upgrading:)

My GA-MA78G-DS3H never worked in dual channel. :x
Also, it ran the processor at a higher than normal voltage at stock, for whatever reason.

A set of Corsair 4GB DDR3 that I got on "Sale" for $120 and MSI 4850 on sale "$180." Seeing how cheap ram prices are now makes me feel bad for buying the latest stuff. Also Now I got that 4850 for sale for $45 with a 120mm fan mod and won't even sell for that much frown.gif (not advertising).

Now I buy 1 generation behind or Mid range stuff so I don't lose so much money when reselling.

HAF 932 (Extremly heavy, and I found ugly as heck after the initial OMG gamer case phase. Dunno why I bought it. LOOK AT A CASE AT A STORE BEFORE YOU BUY)
Delta Fan (over kill, way way way overkill)
corsair 750tx (didn't need it, again overkill. Otherwise great manufacturer)
OCZ ram (terrible performance, but they don't sell Ram anymore)
This motherboard (Not too many great features for the price at the time, doesn't overclock too well)
i7 860 ( I did not need it at all, an i5 750 is what I should've bought)
AZZA 1000 solano (Terrible cable management)
CM v8 cooler (Overpriced performance, decent looks)
Acer Iconia a500 (no support from Acer at all, Honeycomb was terrible)

As the title says. Gives reasons for your choices to help others make decisions. No fanboy comments please.

Can be anything form fans and cases to sound cards:)

Ok, I realize a bit fan boy ish. I know HAF's are extremely popular. It really isn't for everyone

my cpu/mobo, i bought in in oct 2010, then in jan 2011 sandy bridge was out, oh great, it was actually cheapo with cheapo mobos unlike previous i5 750 mobos, and oc like mad being cooler than my phenom2,

my gtx460 768, call me crazy but i was happy with my 4830, i did not see too much change, maybe the games at the time were not demanding, oh and just a little latter 6850 came out with 1gb, i wanted to kill myself

that aside i am happy with my pc for gaming, but i know that money could have been spent better
