[Intermediate] Ice Cube

Project: Ice Cube

Final Pics:
397

The original plan was this to be a home theater pc, with the motherboard inverted and it also be water cooled. The gentle typhoons in the front, makes it a little too loud for a home theater pc however the rest of the PC mostly went to plan. The basic idea from the design point was for everything to be white and try to illuminate as much of it with LEDs. This project was mostly done to learn how to machine and handle acrylic for my next project; building my main workstation custom PC case when ivy bridge comes out.

The project is made out of cast acrylic mostly, white sleeving by mdpc, and all held together by a bunch of black nylon screws. Almost every single piece of acrylic can be dismantled by removing all the screws, and as such, unfortunatly makes this case fairly weak structurally (I shoulda used thicker acrylic).

Parts included:
Corsair 650W PSU
ASUS p5W deluxe
core 2 e6600
MCP350 pump
Swiftech 240 rad
geforce 260

Anyways, theres not that many pictures as I don't know where're i've stored them, so enjoy this fairly limited work log frown.gif Next time it will be much more indepth.

The LEDs are 5050 SMD LEDS and run on 12Volts. They are the same as the ones found in BitFenix Alchemy LED light strip, although much cheaper if you buy them from overseas online. I tried 3mm and 5mm round LEDs but I found those to be very weak compared to these 5050 smd LEDS.

Beautiful.... First rig with the mobo upside-down that I have seen smile.gif And love the lighting as well,

Why dont you do your next case, using the same concept?

Upside down motherboard, only much taller case, with all the tubing going upwards 90 degrees and white cables as well. going 90 degrees, with the radiators as the backdrop?
It would look like a white "forest". With the LEDs shining from below the white base acrylic. With one side clear, to look inside.

That would look killer imo.

Ya looks like the same kind, although i don't have any experience with RGB ones as I bought the pure white color one. They can be cut at around every 3 LED or 2-3 inches and daisy chained easily if you know how to solder, or else you can just buy the connectors, they are like 75 cents each.

I really like that idea, it would have been perfect in this case. Move the reservoir and PSU under the base, and have everything go straight up, don't know what do do with the rad thou. My next case however is gonna be absolutely massive, 36 inches by 30 inches by 15 inches, I might be with upside down motherboard, havent decided. However the idea is to compartementalize everything in colored frosted acrylic. Like a Mac Pro inside but nicer, and with no cables inside being visible at all, covered in colorless frosted acrylic. Top and bottom made out colored frosted acrylic and most of the case being see-through. It will have to house 2 480mm rads, a custum acrylic reservoir and thinking of using acrylic tubes instead of normal tubing. Anyways I should have a 3d diagram next week or so made.

Very nice job! Could you provide an estimate on how much the case itself took to build? I may be interested in doing something similar.

Time or money wise? If I where to redo today, I would get a very accurate drawing first of my plan, and then get tapplastics.com to do as many of the cuts done for me as possible, as I wasted way too much time and acrylic trying to do it myself. The acrylic cost around 150 - 200$, time wise 2 - 3 months, half that time was spent waiting on parts to cross the border from states to canada. If you spend a couple hours a night on it, definatly doable under one months, if your new like I was, probably not. Also if you do want to use acrylic i would recommend studying up on how to machine it properly, i.e. special drill bits for drilling and I recommend a scroll saw for cutting. Cast acrylic is far easier to work with then extruded acrylic, which can melt quite easily. Other then that, you'll learn most of it as you go. Good luck biggrin.gif

that looks amazing! I do not get warm fuzzy feelings from the stresses that must be putting on the motherboard and PCIe slot though...

That actually answers exactly what I was wondering about. I would be fine having it take months as long as it turns out as planned. Thanks! +rep
