550 ti as a Physx GPU - Page 3

Yeah as others said you should be fine witha gtx 590 since right now its more then powerful enough to get a good fps for most games tongue.gif maybe when/if games become more intense might be with a look at a physx card. Currently with a 3way sli gtx 470 and when i did have a 465 for physx it didnt really do much to help so ended up putting physx on the 470's intead.

But gts 450 would be fine used one of my gts 450s for physx on a gtx 460 set up and it handled it just fine, i believe the bare minimum recommend for physx is a 9800gt (or similar) now days

You came up with a good point because just the other day i was sad that i couldnt figure out what i would to when i send my 590 for RMA. A new card will not be coming back for a few days or even 1-2 weeks so a back up card can keep the computer going.

Lol, yeah, I was there when I RMA'ed my MSI GTX 560ti and all I had was my onboard 2500K on my Z68 motherboard as backup. Surprisingly it got me by. Obviously had to reduce resolution and graphic settings big time, but "an I5 2500K @ 5000mhz aint to be meezed wit!"

Get the GTS450, that's perfect for physX.

The problem with running physX on one of two cards in an SLI set (not dedicating one core to physX entirely) is that physX really only runs on one 'core'. It doesn't 'monopolize' that core, that core can still participate in SLI to do rendering, HOWEVER, it slows that one core down, which in turn causes the other core to have to slow down to match it (if it didn't do that, there'd be microstutter).

Thus, the single-core 'hit' from physX is effectively doubled.

Put another way, if physX takes 20% of the resources of 1 core, then it also takes 20% of the other core by simply making that 2nd core 'idle' some of the time, leading to poor scaling overall.

Batman AC has all kinds of other problems with DX11 though, so don't expect miracles with a physX card, but a decent dedicated card like a 450 should help nicely on Alice and Mafia 2 especially, since it actually handles the physX load differently when there's an actual dedicated physX card vs. a card that's doing both rendering and physX.

I've a EVGA GTX 560 ti 2gb graphics card, and when I try to use ether my 8800gts or 9800gt they pose a significant bottleneck. Infact, in the NVidia control panel when the GTX 560 ti 2gb and 8800gts(or 9800gt) and Auto is selected for PhysX, it does not want to use the lesser card. You would not be able to use your nice gtx 590 ti with a 8800/9800 card as physx. For the last few months I've been using an EVGA GTX 260 216core as my physX, vastly superior to the GTX 560 ti 2gb alone. (+12fps on Arkham City)
Now, I'm taking out the 260 to stick in my son's rig. The options I have for a second PhysX card is a GTX 285 or a GTX 550 ti 1gb. Would the 550 ti be better than the 285 for physx? I know it runs like 20 degrees cooler. No point answering "That's Overkill, use a 8800/9800" because I have fully debunked that idea.

More than plenty of power for PhyX. Runs fine off of my old 8800GTX

Paired with my GTX 560 Ti 2gb card, an 8800gts drasticly lowered fps during physx heavy moments. Also, fluidmark got almost half the score for physx with the 8800gts dedicated physx that it did as the gtx alone. For a powerful card like the GTX 560 ti or higher, the 8800gts is as useless as a physx card as an Ageia PPU.
