FarCry or FarCry 2

Thread Starter
I have both games but ironically haven't beaten either one. Out of the two games which would you guys recommend me beating first?

Now I know it would be easy to just say go for the first but with the amount of time I have to spend on video games as of lately I'm basically asking which game did you guys feel that.

A: was more fun?

B: most compelling story?

C: Did it keep you coming back for more?

Thanks everyone. thumb.gif

This is a great question!!

I personally like Far Cry more than Far Cry 2. So I vote Far Cry. Far Cry 2 has a select group of people that just loved it despite some of its flaws. I really was never able to get past the ENDLESS patrols of Far Cry 2 and the fact that you could only save from safe houses. The combat was fun but the map was MASSIVE. Like, takes 2 hours to get from point A to Point B massive.

Both great games though, you should finish them both. Far Cry first though IMO.

To answer your questions

Far Cry was more fun for me.

Far Cry had the more compelling story.

Far Cry 2 probably has more replay value just because it's so long already. Plus, upgradable stuff and new weapons.

1st one is too old, 2nd one is one of the most retarded games I have ever played with enemies respawning 5 mins after you killed them and annoy you as hell. Really frustrating experience. And yes, some idiot left all those suit-cases with diamonds in them all over Africa tongue.gif
And characters speak unrealistically fast, very funny
And wild animals are so stupid that they keep jumping in front of your car LOL

So... neither.

A,B, and C all go to FC1. You might be able to find some graphics mods for it, it's built on Cryengine 1.

Oh, and FC1 goes sideways halfway thru, just like Crysis did with its stupid aliens. You'll know when that is because it won't be as fun.

FC1 is definitely the better game but it's pretty dated at this point. It was a graphical powerhouse at the time of it's release, so there isn't really much to it gameplay wise. And yea it pulls a Crysis by having you fighting mutants halfway through the game.

FC2 was complete and utter trash. One of the most generic, repetitive, boring games I've ever played in my life.

Far Cry 1 for all 3.

For "more to come back to", you might think FC because of bigger maps / upgrades and stuff, but no. Far Cry 1 + realistic difficulty will have you coming back FOREVER.

Far Cry 1. I went back and played it a few years ago and it was surprisingly good. The AI is still very solid, and on the higher difficulties it's a very hard game.

Install these mods to increase draw distances, etc:

Far Cry is a very good game on it's own, let alone besides Far Cry 2.

Crysis is more of a spiritual Far Cry 2 than Far Cry 2 itself is. I enjoy Far Cry and Crysis quite a bit, and not so much Far Cry 2.

The visuals aren't so much as "not good enough" as they are "dated". What I mean is that things still look nice overall, but there's some factors that just beg to be improved to today's levels that can't be improved and it pulls at you.

For example, things aren't as dense and detailed. There's blurry textures in the distance, and the density/draw distance of the foliage are things I wish we could improve, and the 64-bit patch posted above doesn't help much (plus the 64-bit patch has problems with "replace me" textures in some levels for some people, myself being one last I tried it so I had to give up and uninstall it). From what I noticed when I tried it, it renders more 3D terrain (pushing the "fog limit" back some), but the textures are still blurry, the the foliage isn't really increased all too much, so the real problems remain. I wasted many hours looking up configurations, commands, tweaks, etc., and it just seems it can't be done. That being said, the game still looks good and is still fun.

Also, if you go with Far Cry, there's an unofficial 1.41 patch (Docs Unofficial Far Cry 1.41); I highly recommend you use it! Otherwise, there's an annoyance where the AI can shoot through tents, and while this is realistic, it's not when they can see you through them too! In the earlier levels, there's some spots this ruins. The game wasn't originally like this, but it was a change made for multiplayer than left a bad effect on singleplayer, so look that unofficial patch up and use it. I don't think it makes any other changes.

Also, I recommend keeping adaptive AI off since this, more or less, changes the difficulty on the fly depending on how you are playing? I'd rather just set it to a difficulty so you know that's where it was the whole way through. The game is hard, too, especially on the top two or so difficulty levels. It's a very long and enjoyable though. The voices are too quiet though; that's my other big dislike about it.

Far Cry the original is a far more entertaining game in my book. It was, when it came out, hands down, the largest graphical leap vs. any other game made that I've EVER seen in the history of gaming.

It's obviously not especially impressive-looking now, but in 2004 when it came out, it was the first 'serious' DX9 title that came out, and everyone was BLOWN AWAY. Crysis was also very impressive for it's time, but ... not like Far Cry was.

That game was the first time I'd seen real dynamic lighting and shadows ... places where a light fixture is hanging from the ceiling, and it's moving around due to wind or whatnot ... and the shadows cast by that light would also move around in response to the lights movement ... there was NO game I'd ever seen that had that feature, and I sat and stared at the effect for like 20 minutes, tripping out on it. It was SOOOOO cool.

The specular effects it had (the shimmer on the metal pipes and such) were never before seen, and the WATER, are you KIDDING ME? There'd never been water REMOTELY that good looking in a game before. We take stuff like that for granted now, but ... at that time? It was friggin stunning as a total package.

THe game's pretty fun too ... decently gripping story, the AI is still never been significantly surpassed in quality, and lots of levels are big sandboxes (also never seen before, not like that) with multiple paths to the end points, some quality set pieces, some sweet battles ... and the hang-glider rides ... those were SO amazing when that game came out ... again, never seen anything like that before.

But then there's some of the corridor crawl levels sprinkled in there that are a bit on the frustrating/boring side, for sure. Fortunately there's only one stretch where you're really inside for a bunch of levels in a row, and then when you finally get back outside ... it's AWESOME what's going on out there ... like the best level in the game ... and all is forgiven thumb.gif

Basically the outdoor parts rock, the indoor parts are meh. And it's LONG AS HELL, like three of your average SP FPS games nowadays in length. It's hard too, in part due to a fairly brutal checkpointing system.

I really couldn't stand FC2 ...aside from very nice graphics (esp. given that you didn't need THAT much hardware for it to look REALLY good ... I wish other games used Dunia engine cause it rocks) ... it's an annoying and repetitive snooze-fest to me. Never finished it (not even close actually) though so maybe it gets better ...

FarCry 2 is like the wonder bra. You see a gal with a smoking hot bod and a nice pair of bo...eyes. Take her home and off comes the top and on goes the frowny face.

FarCry2 had SOOOOO much potential but what a complete let down. It is how ever fun to just fart around on like GTAIV.
