It's obviously not especially impressive-looking now, but in 2004 when it came out, it was the first 'serious' DX9 title that came out, and everyone was BLOWN AWAY. Crysis was also very impressive for it's time, but ... not like Far Cry was.
That game was the first time I'd seen real dynamic lighting and shadows ... places where a light fixture is hanging from the ceiling, and it's moving around due to wind or whatnot ... and the shadows cast by that light would also move around in response to the lights movement ... there was NO game I'd ever seen that had that feature, and I sat and stared at the effect for like 20 minutes, tripping out on it. It was SOOOOO cool.
The specular effects it had (the shimmer on the metal pipes and such) were never before seen, and the WATER, are you KIDDING ME? There'd never been water REMOTELY that good looking in a game before. We take stuff like that for granted now, but ... at that time? It was friggin stunning as a total package.
THe game's pretty fun too ... decently gripping story, the AI is still never been significantly surpassed in quality, and lots of levels are big sandboxes (also never seen before, not like that) with multiple paths to the end points ... but then some of the corridor crawl levels sprinkled in are a bit on the boring side, for sure.
Basically the outdoor parts rock, the indoor parts are meh. And it's LONG AS HELL, like three of your average SP FPS games nowadays in length. It's hard too, in part due to a fairly brutal checkpointing system.
I really couldn't stand FC2 ...aside from very nice graphics (esp. given that you didn't need THAT much hardware for it to look REALLY good ... I wish other games used Dunia engine cause it rocks) ... it's an annoying and repetitive snooze-fest to me. Never finished it (not even close actually) though so maybe it gets better ...
I totally agree with about every word. I remember getting my GeForce 6800 GS AGP and putting it in my Dell and this game blew me away. The water especially; that did it! I feel in love with my GeForce 6800 GS and PC gaming for sure right there. Of course, it wasn't just the visuals; the open sandbox style took my in too. Sadly, few games seemed to pick up that trend besides Crysis (which I love it for more than the visuals or hype). It wasn't my introduction to PC gaming, but it's when I got into higher end gaming/harware and enthusiasm more, and I agree with what you said; I haven't seen a leap like it since. Crysis came close and or might even be the same in some rehards (or even better in some), but it wasn't the same; it didn't have as much of an effect (Doom 3 and Half Life 2 were great titles of the times as well).

Oh dear sweet Jesus....this isn't even a remotely fair comparison by far. Far Cry 1 but leaps and bound all the way to the freaking moon and back again compared to Far Crap 2. It was an amazing game for its time, it was a wonder to behold on my Geforce 6800GT which could run it with most of the visual goodies on, it was a real treat back in 2004. Good times....

Yeah, we're spoiled now with much higher LOD's on distant objects, but at the time, there was nothing even remotely close to the kind of draw distances that there are in Far Cry. The vast majority of games didn't even attempt it, you were always in some way 'walled in' so that you never really had the expectation of being able to look out for long distances. The sheer fact that you could stand on a small mountain and look down over an entire landscape, see a reasonably well-rendered environment for the first 100 yards or so, and water stretching all the way to the horizon ... I'd never ever seen that before in a game at that time.
