Way to expensive, would rather just transfer my main drive over.

If your game is installed on C drive it sure should. As long as its something that benefits from lowered read speeds. Now the difference might not be a day and night but, for example, in FPS games you should see your map loading times drop a bit. Assuming the PC is not waiting after network with these loads.

I recently purchased one of these times.

Load times in games have decreased significantly. This has been great since I play a lot of MMOs and swapping from map to map was taking its toll with my two HDDs in raid0, and using a 64gig SSD as a boot drive would mean I'd only see a performance increase in only about two additional games before I hit capacity issues. With this drive, I've been seeing overall performance increases across the board, which has been a very pleasant experience.

That is unfortunate to hear. Although I suspect that the Crucial should have no problem of resetting the key if you contact them about it. Nevertheless would have expected them to be more clever about it, like, for example using the SSD serial as key so the soft is tied to that particular device.

If they are not willing to reset the key, however, then one is better off with some third party program offering the same functionality in a better manner (like, for example, the before mentioned eBoostr or some of its alternatives).

Thread Starter
I personally prefer to install programs on my SSD, and run the OS from a "partition" on my 7200 RPM SATA HDD...

That way if the SSD fails, or the programs become corrupted I can restore them ALONE and not mess with the OS & vice verse.

I rarely use the entire hard disk drive any more, and because SSDs are so expensive, it makes sense to use them just for programs...

Besides it's far too much work to "properly" setup a SSD for an OS, the OS takes up far too much space, and to top it off it uses paging (required), which writes too frequently to the drive, killing it's performance and life expectancy much faster...

While this Cache SSD is an awesome idea, I'd have to see it in action to give you my thoughts on it...

still thinking about the restriction
i will post some restriction from crucial web

source: http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Solid-State-Cache-SSC/Crucial-Adrenaline-FAQ/td-p/87760
Quote:
Q: What is Crucial Adrenaline?

A: Crucial® Adrenaline is a solution that uses a solid state drive as a cache for an existing hard drive to dramatically improve the performance of a Windows 7-based PC.

Q: What drove the development of Crucial Adrenaline?

A: Consumers are storing more and more personal content on their home computers, such as movies, photos, music, and multimedia documents. While traditional hard disk drives provide large amounts of storage at a low cost, solid state drives provide the ability to access that content much more quickly. Currently, the investment in a high-capacity SSD can be cost prohibitive for the average consumer.

Crucial® Adrenaline addresses this pain point by allowing consumers to keep their existing hard drive while boosting data access speeds by up to 8 times. A simple upgrade for Windows® 7 systems, Crucial Adrenaline offers consumers the best of both worlds: SSD-like performance and the capacity of a hard drive, all at an affordable cost..

Q: Who will benefit from the Crucial Adrenaline solution?

A: Consumers who store a lot of personal content such as movies, photos, and music on their home computer and want better performance out of their computer system at an affordable cost.

Q: Is there benefit for our channel partners to sell Crucial Adrenaline?

A: Yes! Crucial Adrenaline creates incremental revenue opportunity today and serves to bridge HDD-dominated PC customer base to eventually purchase higher ASP SSDs in the future.

Q: What is included in the Crucial Adrenaline solution?

A: Crucial Adrenaline comprises of a Crucial m4 2.5” (9.5mm) SSD, a 3.5” adapter bracket, SATA cable, and software.

Q: Is the caching software developed by Micron?

A: No. The caching software was developed by NVELO, customized for Crucial, and thoroughly tested in the Crucial Performance Lab.

Q: Is it difficult to install?

A: A simple upgrade that allows you to keep your existing hard, and thus eliminating the need to transfer files & programs, Crucial Adrenaline offers the best of both worlds: SSD-like performance and the capacity of your hard drive at an affordable cost.

Installation steps are:

1) Using a SATA cable, attach one end of the cable to the SATA connector on the motherboard and the other end to the SSD.

2) Using the available SATA power cable coming from the power supply, connect the cable to the SSD.

3) Mount and secure the SSD in an open drive bay, using the included bracket to adapt the 2.5” SSD to fit into a 3.5” bay.

4) Run the software install wizard.

Q: Is the software on a CD?

A: No. The consumer receives a Software Product Key with the purchase of Crucial Adrenaline. The Software Product Key is available in the Crucial Adrenaline packaging. The consumer registers and downloads the software at: www.crucial.com/support/registeradrenaline

Q: How does the software installation process work?

A: Installation steps are:

1) Extract the software package.

2) Rick-click on the “install.exe” file and choose “Run as Administrator”

3) The software Setup Wizard will appear, click “Next” to continue.

4) Read the End-User License Agreement. Click in the checkbox next to “I accept…” then click “Next” to continue.

5) Enter the Product Key provided in the Quick Start Guide. Note that if you input your Product Key during the software registration/download process, your Product Key is also available in the Thank You email.

6) Select the Target Drive (hard drive) and Cache Drive (SSD), click “Next” to continue.

7) Confirm the Target Drive (hard drive) and Cache Drive (SSD). WARNING: All data on the SSD will be deleted during the software installation process. After confirmation, click “Next” to continue.

8) Click “Install” to begin the installation.

9) After installation is complete a Completed the Dataplex Setup Wizard screen will appear, click “Finish”.

10) To enable the software reboot your system.

Q: What are the system requirements for the software to run properly?

A: In order to run the software properly the computer system must meet the following requirements:

Microsoft Windows 7 operating system
Maintain at least the minimum system memory required by Windows 7
Installed 1 (or more) SATA hard drive(s) and 1 (or more) SATA SSD(s)
One of the of the following storage controllers: Microsoft AHCI, Intel RAID, Intel AHCI, AMD AHCI, Legacy IDE

Q: What restrictions does the software have?

A: Software has the following restrictions:

DO NOT detach your hard drive (target drive) or solid state drive (cache drive) while Dataplex is enabled. Doing so puts you at risk of losing data and/or rendering your machine unbootable. If you need to detach or swap a drive UNISTALL Dataplex first.
DO NOT detach your hard drive (target drive) and put it into another SATA port while Dataplex is enabled. Doing so puts you at risk of losing data and/or rendering your machine unbootable. If you need to switch SATA ports, UNISTALL Dataplex first.

Q: What limitations does the software have?

A: Software has the following limitations:

Works with Windows 7 operating system only.
Only one cache drive (SSD) is supported in a system.
There cannot be two identical SSDs in the system, one of which is to be used as cache.
The target drive (hard drive) must be the primary boot drive. GPT (GUID Partition Table) partitions are not supported.
There is no support for target drives (hard drives) larger than 2TB in capacity.
Uninstall of Dataplex software must be done through the Control Panel. Uninstalling from the install.exe file is not supported.
If after uninstalling Dataplex the system is restored to prior state in which Dataplex was installed, Dataplex will be started in a disabled state.

Q: How does it work?

A: Crucial Adrenaline intelligently places, or “caches “, the most frequently needed files on the SSD and keeps the less frequently used files on the hard drive.

Q: Is there a version of the solution offered under the Micron C400 brand?

A: No. The cache solution is only offered under the Crucial Adrenaline brand.

Q: What are the system requirements for the Adrenaline SSC and Dataplex software?

A: The Adrenaline SSC is designed to run alongside your existing hard drive so a free hard drive bay, SATA port and SATA power connector are required for the physical installation. (3.5” adapter bracket and SATA cable included).

The Dataplex software is only compatible with Windows 7 and we recommend using a 500GB or larger HDD for best results.

Q: Why do I need the Dataplex software?

A: The Dataplex Cache software improves the overall performance of your system by leveraging an SSD as cache for your hard drive. The programs and data used frequently are copied onto the SSC. This allows the system to access this data faster.

Q: Will the Dataplex software work on other (non Adrenaline) SSDs?

A: No. The Dataplex software designed for Crucial will only work with a Crucial Adrenaline SSC.

Q: Am I able to install the software in more than one system?

A: The activation code will only work on one system at a time. It is transferable, however you will have to uninstall it first, and then install it in the next system.

Q: Can Dataplex software cache multiple hard drives?

A: Dataplex will only cache a single drive. It will work on multiple drives providing they are configured in a RAID array, as long as the overall storage is not larger than 2TB.

Considering i just bought a 128GB m4 for $155, a 50 GB SSD worth $110 is not truly worth it.

I'd better spend a couple hours reformatting and get true SSD speed than installing it.

Ugh! In the light of that FAQ this sucks. Really? Only one drive plus if the SSD fails you are boned ?

If you want SSD cache get an Crucial m4 64 Gb and eBoostr desktop edition (while the official price is high I got mine for ~9 euros with a bit of googling for finding an discount code and webstore having an discount at that time). Or any other SSD or combination of these (for example, you can get an 8 Gb PATA SSD for as low as approx 25$ for that legacy IDE slot of yours and it still offer some performance gains when used as HD cache)
