Dedicated BOINC machine.

Thread Starter
I am thinking about building a dedicated BOINC machine and can not decide to go with a Dual 8 core magny-cours setup or with a dual 6 xeon setup. Does anyone have any opinions on this or a better ideas?

Go with Xeons. Every time. And I'm an AMD man.

For sheer computing power, the Xeons would be the better choice but if you need to be a bit frugal then the Magny-Cours would be a better option. Running the Xeons would probably be easier on your electric bill than the Magny-Cours though. A dual Xeon setup with a good graphics card would probably net more credits while contributing a fair bit more power than the dual Magny setup unless you put any savings towards a more powerful GPU or multiple GPUs.

Kind of leaning more towards the xeons. I should be able to get some decent 6 core xeons and invest in a couple of good vid cards later. Magny-cours sound cool especially when you get to 12 and 16 cores but it does not look like it will run as well as 2 6 core xeons for BOINC.

Depends on what projects you want to run. While the Xeons would probably be the best in terms of power and speed, once you hit the 12 core Magny you can fly through quite a few of the WCG CPU units at one time. I would suggest staying away from the 16 core Interlagos chips though as they are built on Bulldozer. But the Xeons will perform better in other programs and projects better than any AMD chip for the foreseeable future.

I think for pure processing power the server chips are the way to go. Once you calculate in the $$, the sandy bridge /Phenom X6 chips start to look a lot better. Then when you compare the server chips to overclocked desktop SB/X6 chips, they outperform the server chips.

I second that magic.
Unless you really need the server features I'd just go with couple of 2500K rigs or something like that

Actually, there are some few tasks that HATE Hyper-Threading and perform significantly better on real cores like AMD X6 chips... all depends on what you run.. SIMAP is one of them... OPTIMA, couple others depending...

Nothing wrong with AMD for crunching... so long as you stay away from Bulldozer crap...

Nothing wrong with AMD for crunching, as long as crunching fast isn't your goal! My A3650 takes its sweet time with WUs. In fact, the 2700k produces more points in less time than the 920 and A3650...combined!
