Modding Part 5 (Fans and ODD)

Allright Forum, back for an update. So I've been up to modding the AP-15 lately and beginning to get the ODD (Blu-Ray Drive) ready for painting. First of all lets get to the fans.

So basically the painting of the fan blades (with ordinary spray paint) is very easy for these, and most other fans. First you have to find this clip and remove it (underneath the sticker):

ATTENTION: these clips fly away, I lost one of them and had to make another clip from a staple. If you can see it fly away, be quite and try to hear where it dropped.

Then you can remove the fan blades easily, be careful to not loose the bearings! The inside of the casing now:

Make sure you properly tape the inside of the fan (the picture shows the fan after painting). When spraying make sure you use thin layers of paint from all angles and do multiple layers. That's it. Also spray from quite a distance to get even distribution. Note that the white balance is incorrect and thus the colours look washed out. Scroll down to see the real thing.

After removing the tape you should have a clear edge like this:

and without the sticker it already looks better, now off to painting it white also (it'll be a stealth drive on the exterior)

those fans look great. is it just spray paint on the fan blades? did you dye them? give us some tips. i've been thinking of trying something like this.

I own these fans for my rads, but I'm scared to paint em. Did a lot of research and a lot of people didn't recommend painting these because they can easily lose there balance so i read. Prob just keep them the same color and paint the fan grills i own red. Far as optical drive goes instead of painting mine I'm gonna put some carbon fiber on it.

Well the fans already came with the white connectors. So all I had to do was sleeve them smile.gif MDPC-X sleeve of course biggrin.gif

Well I was slightly worried as well. When you think about it though, you add maybe 0.05mm of pain and like 1g of it. I mean yes, you can make it loose its balance but I tested all of mine and nothing funny happened. Sadly I didn't get to do a before-and-after test but since I will be most likely getting some more for another small mod, I can then do the test, or order one anyways (need one for the rig of a buddy, most likely). We'll see but I'm happy with the result! Do as you wish and it's good to know the risks but its a modding world (for me) so the balance is important, but not a killer for me not to paint them. biggrin.gif
