Don't worry. I built a rig for my mate in 2009/2010 or so with an HD 4890 in it. He had glitches on GTA IV and gpu acceleration would cause the drivers to crash. I started a thread and while there were some really great members who helped me out (problem wasn't solved though), most of the ATI users simply answered with PEBKAC. Now I just advise him to reinstall Windows whenever such a major issue comes up rolleyes.gif

I had two 4890s and an HD 5850 myself and never encountered this, but there are users that have these problems and when they occur it's definately annoying and I can honestly say that it isn't PEBKAC. Had a similar issue with an HD 5770, terrible driver experience.

Btw, I had a mate in college that had an old x1300 Radeon Mobility in it that had the same problem with CCC as you describe. Needs a fresh Windows install, only that will solve it.

That I personally have not encountered those issues with nVidia cards yet does not mean that they are none existent either. Some users just don't accept that it happens and flame the wrong party.

This is false, I have built multiple systems with AMD cards in the last 2 years and I have occasionally run into this problem. You can do a completely clean driver install, uninstall with control panel, then sweeper, then do clean full install of catalyst.

You do not need clean windows install, it requires clean CCC install. This problem stems from installing new drivers/CCC versions over old ones with no cleaning of old drivers beforehand.

I have literally fixed this problem several times.

AMD has switchable graphics. I'm not exactly sure how it's implemented, but supposedly there's a small delay (maybe a second or so) between switching between discrete and integrated.

Of course I tried this too. It did not work. Although the driver did not crash in this case, it wouldn't even open.

On occasion I have had to clean and reinstall the drivers a couple times before CCC will come back up. It is annoying but not un-fixable.

EDIT:
I think once on my moms computer I did this 3 times before it would open correctly. The problem is easily prevented by proper driver installation from the beginning.

Not trying to derail the thread but again, why aren't you starting a new thread to get it troubleshooted? This is completely repairable, but just posting little bits and pieces of the issue here will get you nowhere in terms of fixing it.

I know this, but my questions is whether this works with their upper level cards. At least with nvidias current version of optimus, gtx cards do not work. But with kepler and the release of optimus 1.2, supposedly this will change.

Why can't NVidia get it right with 28nm? ***.
