Whether you're torrenting or downloading Steam games, you're doing the same thing--unfairly hogging bandwith. They should throttle everyone who does that. It's absolutely ridiculous, those who feel entitled to download/upload 24/7 at the disadvantage of all their neighbors (me)

How is Steam hogging bandwidth? Yes, you download massive games, but I purchased the game, so I need to download it in order to play it whereas someone who pirates media 24/7 is breaking the law and using more bandwidth because they upload and download at the same time, and that imo, Is bandwidth hogging. I have a legitimate, legal reason to use that internet to download my game.
I don't want to come off as a jerk, but I understand where you're coming from, but i also believe its also the isp's fault too. All their complaining about how hard it is for them to keep up with the demand while other countries can push more data then us

that is one of the most ridiculous thing I have heard. I understand people saying pirates should be throttled, as it is an illegal activity, but for someone to say you shouldn't be able to use your connection that you paid good money for on whatever legal thing you want, whenever you want, and as much as you want... that is absurd. If you are not getting your advertised speeds, you need to blame your ISP, not some a fellow customer who is legally using his bandwidth that he paid for. I for one think cable internet is expensive, and it I am not using it, it's being wasted. You pay $x/month for unlimited, and get charged the same whether you use it or not, I for one, am going to max it out. You're trying to tell me to go on a diet while still paying to go to nice, all-you-can-eat-buffets. No thanks.

The rep I talked to mentioned that the owner of said copyrighted material provided them with my IP. So they connect to the swarm to monitor IP's.

It's law that the owner of the network is responsible. since it is your internet no matter what your neighbor did you would be held accountable.

I really hope you are being sarcastic.

I transfer 2+ gigs of data from my home before I'm out of traffic and at work by 8am, and that isn't even including my personal usage. Streaming movies, music and games and cloud services syncing add a lot to that. I just emailed (more like hosted) 5 gigs of raw photos to my family and transferred a 10 gig backup from a remote machine in another state to my home machine, etc.

If you watch ~ two HD Netflix movies a day, you reach a 250gb cap in a month if you use your connection for NOTHING else like email, surfing, updates.

Or you get a real internet connection that isn't shared by youe whole neighborhood, or one that is but has more than enough bandwidth to cope with actual usage.

So you're saying throttle them instead of you. What makes your usage more important than theirs?

I've also never had this problem, and plenty of people in my building use their connection for high bandwidth applications.

With the amount of rich media available, asking someone to reduce their usage because the network is inadequate is backwards. I do feel entitled to use my bandwidth for whatever I want - I PAY FOR IT!

Exactly. But with the current laws (or lack of regulation is more like it), providers can change terms of your agreement to make you keep paying the same fee for less service. It's sad that they can sell you one thing for a price, then months or years later come back and change the terms without renegotiating the contract.

Plus (in the USA at least), they are all doing the same thing. All the contract communications companies (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile) have "capped plans" and some have "unlimited plans" that have bottlenecked rates after certain data usage.

And if you can't print books fast enough nowadays, you press more CDs or sell it cheaper on Amazon.com lachen.gif ;-)

Exactly. But with the current laws (or lack of regulation is more like it), providers can change terms of your agreement to make you keep paying the same fee for less service. It's sad that they can sell you one thing for a price, then months or years later come back and change the terms without renegotiating the contract.
Plus (in the USA at least), they are all doing the same thing. All the contract communications companies (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile) have "capped plans" and some have "unlimited plans" that have bottlenecked rates after certain data usage.
And if you can't print books fast enough nowadays, you press more CDs or sell it cheaper on Amazon.com lachen.gif ;-)

Yes, ISP are milking people. But I paid for my cap, I'm going to use it. If it is slow, that's a performance problem with the provider, not my usage.
