NB overclock HEAT!

Thread Starter
I OCed my CPU from 3.4 to 3.8, and NB from 2.0 to 2.6, and upped the voltage a bit.

When the comp is idle, there is little heat, but when gaming and in stress tests, the NB heatsink gets very very hot.

IDK if this is okay redface.gif

499

Thats my mobo, and the NB is the heatsink to the left of the cpu, according to the pic orientation.

How hot is very hot? the 990FXA-UD* board's NB tends to get quite warm, so its probably not a bad board or anything.

I purchased the board early february, been good since now, no problems.

How hot? uhm IDK come over and you'll see. biggrin.gif But really, can keep fingers on it, won't kill ya. It's like sitting on your hands but more hotter..uhm how to explain...

Touching a car engine after a few mile drive, but won't make you move your hand.

SO i guess no that hot.

try putting a fan on it or moving the wires out from around it if you have them just all over in the case a little airflow can work magic
you can also try putting new/better thermal paste on the nb heatsink by using a pair of tweezers on the back of the white pegs there to pop them out of the board (from the bottom of the board) and then reapply thermal paste (after cleaning off the old paste/thermal pads) my nb temps dropped by about 15c and now dont go over 40c after doing this

I have excellent airflow in the haf 912 with fans everywhere
I guess I could put a 72mm on it.
It has a thermal pad, no paste, I looked under the heatsink. Just one long pad on a few what is it? Micro processors?

I you are refering to the heatsink between the CPU and the usb/sound/etc connectors on the back, those are your VRMs. The higher the volts running through your cpu, the hotter it'll be.

that would be the motherboard chipset and then i would recommend putting some real thermal paste on it if you feel its something that you could do
also try downloading hwmonitor or something so you can say temps and not just very hot cause its alot easier for people to help if you can tell them a degree rather than an opinion

EDIT: ya the heatsink between the video card and cpu is your northbridge the heatsink between the rear i/o ports and cpu is your vrm's

I'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to put paste on your VRMs.

And yes, an actual temp would be great.

I said NB lol. I meant the NB not VRM or SB or ram, or next door neighbor's dog's paw. wink.gif

Since I do OC the NB and NB voltage, that gets hot.

It's fine I guess, but gets irritating.

i was referring to the northbridge with the reapplying paste and thats a good thing to know and ill have to read up on it because i just bought some vrm heatsinks and they said to use arctic 5 thermal paste for best results

id just put a extra fan on it and hope it cools down a little more or go for reapplying the paste if your that annoyed with it but the fan should do the trick
