Time for an overdue upgrade woop woop, thoughts?

Hi peeps,

Had a frackar with my pc of late and spent a week trying to figure out what was wrong. Only to discover it was a bloody driver for the GPU lol.

Anyway. During this time I was almost convinced I had to buy new bits. Now it's all fixed the Fiancee has granted me permission to upgrade anyway yay.

So wanted some advise/opinions on the hardware. So far I'm looking at

Intel i7 Core 3820 3.60GHz

MSI X79A-GD65 Intel X79 or Asus p9x79 or Asus sabretooth X79

Kingston HyperX Genesis Blu 8GB DDR3 or corsair vengance Lp 8gb

Thermaltake Frio CPU Cooler ( comes with it ) I may keep my old one in my sig rig!

ASUS ENGTX580 DCII/2DIS/1536MD5 ( when the price comes down once the new 600 series come out )

Planning on 2x 64gb ssd's in raid for main OS

Keeping my PSU and Tower I expect as I think they are good enough ( from my sig rig).

Any thoughts peeps?

That is QUITE the upgrade! I'd say, thats probably overkill, but this is Overclock.net, so you might as well go for it.

As for your power supply...It should be proficient in powering everything there. I'm not sure if you were planning on SLI, in which case you'd maybe need to upgrade. But for now, looks good.

Just wondering...what do you do? Just games?

haha yeah I try to do things properly and the fact my last machine has lasted me about 4 coming on 5 years I don't plan another upgrade for at least that time lol.

I sometimes use Maya/Poser and some other bits and bobs for work away from work but mainly gaming. It does also run the entire media set up through the house. Probably behaves more like a server to be fair to it lol

It also means my little bro can get my cast off's which is a massive step up for him.

As for SLi, I don't care much for it. Believe it or not my 8800 with a few little tweeks sees me play most games with adequate settings including Crysis 1+2 even reasonably well on 3d set up. ( not perfect but playable )

Just needed some input on what bits people recommend. I know there are some new CPU's and GPU's coming out soon? so I may wait a month or so and if the price is right get other upgrades but at least if I start looking now I will have an idea.

Decided on the sabertooth x79 I hear it's a great board. One less thing to decide anyway haha

You want 4 5 years to last ? I'd say go for 4x4gb rams then, that's a quad channel DDR CPU i believe. Not to experience compatibility issues go for a 1600mhz kit. Those SB-E CPUs are supposed to be 1600 native.

I had a Thermaltake Frio for a year or so, and LOVED it. I don't think I ever saw my quad-core AMD chip ever see 45c. I had two fans on it and ran it around the medium-highish speed. ( It comes wil 2 little fan controllers that I manually turned up) It wasn't that loud either. thumb.gif

I would consider using a 2600k or something along those lines (overclockable and you'd probably save something on the board). The new chips ARE coming out, and if you're big into overclocking, they're probably worth waiting for. If you AREN"T big into overclocking, they're probably worth waiting for because prices are about to drop. Then again, it's unlikely that you're going to have a CPU bottleneck in incoming games, so really whatever you like is fine.

Where you MIGHT have one, however, is in VRAM, if you buy a 580 with only 1.5 gigs of vram. I'd suggest paying the extra 20 bucks or whatever into a 3 GB version of whatever card you end up liking. Games are already starting to use a lot of VRAM through textures, etc, and it's only going to increase.

Ram is more or less interchangeable. That said, the corsair I have is awesome. 8 is probably all you need for the next couple years. Getting another 8 later is no big deal.

The 2x64 GB setup I think works quicker, but from my understanding you won't notice a large difference between that and a single 128 GB drive (all this assumes you're using a reliable brand). I would probably consider price as a deciding factor there, personally, but others might disagree. This is really the end all be all of SSD information threads. I'd suggest using it to make your purchase, and there's a sister thread Sean made about installing your SSDs which I think is a MUST as it lowers your install and has some tips and tricks for preserving your drive. As a rule of thumb, Intel, Samsung, Crucial and Corsair are the nice SSD drives because they're much less likely to brick on you...but any specific drive you find and are interested in, it's worth looking into reviews and what people think about them first.

Thanks Geritol!

Do you really need a $320 mobo? I know its a great board but you can probably get one just as good for a little cheaper.

I just looked at your sig rig, and all I had to say was damn. I agree that your long overdue for an upgrade. My thoughts is for you to get the Sabertooth motherboard, as well as the Corsair Vengeance memory that was made to match the color scheme of that board. And unless your wanting the 3D options, Physx, etc. that NVidia has to offer, and do believe me i am an NVidia fanboy, but at this point the 7950 would be a better option for around the same price. the 3GB of VRAM, the new 28mm die, and the amount of overclocking ability and headroom it has, as well as the low power consumption, it's the better option. Hell, you can even go with a 7970 if you want, but that is a little too much. But, if you want, you can wait just a little longer, maybe a week or so, and see what NVidia has in store for us with the Kepler cards.
