LGA 1155. LGA 2011 isn't expected to have Ivy Bridge-E until sometime late in 2013. So the 2011 chips that we have currently, that's all that we'll see for quite a while (fully possible they ditch Ivy-E all together, time will tell).

Ivy Bridge = LGA 1155
Ivy Bridge-E = LGA 2011, but no certain release date (late 2013 rumors)

Whats the diff between the Sandy/Ivy and the E versions? Also if I got a board which socket should I get? Also any ideas how long they are going to keep using those sockets?

I would go for a Z77 (1155) motherboard personally. Most up to date. Something from Asus or ASRock, as both have proven themselves to be huge in the Sandy Bridge overclocking scene. No reason to go for LGA 2011 unless you have deep pockets and want absolutely the best of the best (when mainstream parts are just as good).

The difference is what socket they're on honestly. 2011 has up to 6 core / 12 thread processors. 1155 only has 4 core / 8 thread at most.

They'll keep using these sockets till I'm assuming 2013 or so. And even then, its not like you're going to be COMPLETELY outdated. A good LGA 775 Core 2 Quad system is still potent enough today, and last generation i5's and i7's are still huge players in gaming. 1155 or 2011, either should last a good 4-5 years at minimum for gaming only, so long as you know something better is always going to eventually replace it. If it works, don't fix it. wink.gif

I was really hoping to see your intel socket list go back to SLOTS, forget those silly sockets.

Pioneer is right on track here. SB-E is SB-Enthusiast, the 1155 is what most people should be looking at unless you can benefit from the quad channel memory and extra processing power. In my opinion, if your only gaming, and typical computer usage(web, burning dvds, ect.) then 1155 is going to cover you for the next 2-4 years at least.

Sandy and ivy only work in 1155 boards, sandy bridge-e only works in 2011. Unlike amd intel sockets arnt as flexable. However, there are many options for each platform.

Any 1155 board will take any 1155 processor, with the exception of H61 and H67, which you don't want anyway as they don't overclock. P67, Z68, and Z77 will all take any 1155 chip and overclock (limited with non K versions, since BCLK doesn't overclock too well).

So P67 and Z68 boards (current Sandy Bridge boards) will take Ivy Bridge when its released. Z77 boards will take Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge as well, but will offer more features, since its newer.

So are the 2011 and LGA 1155 sockets intercompatible? Will a 2011 work on a LGA 1155 board or vice versa? Also do we have any idea what socket the procs after ivy bridge will be(Haswell, Broadwell,Skylake and Skymont)

No, they are not interchangeable. 1155 = 1155 only. 2011 = 2011 only.

No idea what the next generation sockets will be yet. Too far away right now.
