The GTX 580 has terrible scaling compared to pretty much 6970 in crossfire. That is why a cfx 6970 depite a 15% slower performance is just as fast as a 580 in sli.

I bet its you and not the cards themselves.

^ Agreed and roughly 90% scaling across all 3 cards.

Yea if you buy the 1.5gb model of the GTX580. Good luck with a single monitor @ 1080 or 1200p

The 7970 still has a better performance per dollar

These ATI guys act like they were the ones to invent 3gb cards "7970 this, or 7970 that" I mean come on. Would you have recommended a 6950 over a 1.5gb 580 a few months ago? Doubt it.

edit: and you can claim that 580's have bad scaling or what-not, but you cant argue scaling anything when youre simply running out of vram

Alot of thing have problems scale well to four gpus.... But four would still be better, just not for the price. x2 6990 or x3 7970 have best perfromance today. Some platforms (AMD 990FX) let you run four cards thou, so if your platform can do that then the best is x4 7970. However, x3 gpus is money better spent. On sidetrack, has anyone tried one 6990 and one 6970 is crossfire? That woild be the same as three 6970s, wouldnt it?

If you are playing at 2560 by 1600 or eyefinity anything... stick with multiples of 3gb 580s or 7970s.

if you overclocked it (~4.8ghz) i dont see why you couldnt. 32 full pcie lanes. Your better off with a 2x00k, but do you need one? I would say no. Bd wasnt what we were hoping for but its not as bad as its made to be. True, x4 7970 is a massive load but with a massive overclock (witch we know bd IS hood for)..... Ill say maybe.

I wouldn't upgrade from two 6990's unti next year, if not later.

If you already have them that changes the argument a bit... personally I'd just stick with them unless you're running 7680x1600 or something crazy like that... what resolution are you running?
