So my roommate just bought the components for a complete system upgrade, He bought an
Asrock extreme X79
Core I7 3820
16 gigs of ram
GTX 560Ti 448 core

He is running his old power supply that is a OCZ GXS 700, and the system just seems to be power cycling.
When I hit the power button, the case fans will spin up, but nothing else appears to, and the PSU lights only come on momentarily before cycling back off.

Is this a PSU issue?

I've had this problem with and old 650Watt BFG PSU on a old rig of mine, it maybe dead. I replaced it and got my system running like a champ again. But before your roommate makes a purchase, try testing the system with another PSU, or testing components with another board. But, more than likely the PSU is shot.

Thanks guys, I dont have another PSU or board to test with at the moment, I also read that thread and it kind of confirmed my fears.

I am going to try and test the PSU by itself using this trick

Sounds like the PSU, when you say "old" are you talking 3 or more years? I had a piece of crap Okia (kill me now) that did the same thing and turns out the already few capacitors it had were bulging or fried. Canicon's btw mad.gif Crack it open and take a look?

Well, checked the PSU using the method I linked above, it didnt do much of anything.
Just picked up a corsair tx850, it was 20 bucks off, plugged er in and it boots, now I just need to get it in the case and get those cables looking neat again mad.gif
